She grew up in Springfield, KY in a large, loving family, one of ten siblings, and graduated from Washington County High School in 1968. She was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Louisville, focusing on education. She was a teacher in Jefferson County for 30 years.
Pastimes she most loved were reading, gardening, and tennis for which she was known for her “wicked” backhand. She spent the summer of 1974 backpacking through Europe and developed a love of traveling which she rediscovered after retiring in 2002. She could often be found spending time in the company of her lifelong friends. Their favorite afternoons were spent under a shaded tree in Bernheim forest with sack lunches and endless laughter. With this group she also discovered her latent talent as a canoeist.
She was deeply devoted to her family especially enjoying Smith gatherings and time with her grandchildren. Her most natural instinct was maternal and it was often said that she should have had more children. As a devout, lifelong Catholic she was a member of Immaculate Conception parish for over 30 years. Her devotion was to Eucharistic Adoration.
She is predeceased by her husband, Boyce Carter, and two brothers, Fred and T.F. Smith. She is survived by her four sons, Cambron Carter (Nazli) of Los Angeles, CA, Scott Carter (Erin) and Chad Carter (Jamie) of Louisville, KY, Bryan Carter (Shelley) of Jackson, MS, and her sisters Linda Smith and Peggy Haydon of Louisville, KY, Maura Walker (Eric) of Springfield, KY, Diane Edelen (Tony) and Janice Cambron of Versailles, KY, and brothers Richard Smith (Ellen) of Louisville, KY, and J.D. Smith of Lexington, KY. She is also survived by Iris Carter and Beth Carter of Louisville, KY and her five grandchildren McKenna, Avery, Jack, Lily, and Emma Carter.
A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 11 AM on Thursday, September 8, 2022, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with visitation from 9AM until Mass. A committal service will be at 4 PM at Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery in Halls Gap, KY.
