May 24, 1940 – January 2, 2025
Gordon Bertram Stanley, 84, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, surrounded by his devoted family.
Born on May 24, 1940, in Jackson Heights, NY, to the late Robert and Marguerite Stanley, Gordon lived in numerous places he fondly called home including Port Washington NY, Moss Point, MS and finally LaGrange, KY, where he resided for the past 37 years.
Growing up in Port Washington, NY, on Manhasset Bay, sparked a lifelong passion for the water, boating, and fishing. He cultivated a love for the outdoors and developed steadfast values through his involvement in the Boy Scouts of America, proudly achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and membership in the Order of the Arrow.
Gordon’s commitment to excellence continued through his education at St. Paul’s High School in Garden City, NY, and Norwich University, in Northfield, VT, the oldest private military college in the United States. Upon graduating, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, beginning a career marked by honor and service. Gordon was a Tank Platoon leader in Erlangen, Germany and completed a tour of duty in Vietnam, where he served as a Mobile Advisory Team (MAT) Leader. Gordon ultimately retired from the Army Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel after 28 years of distinguished service. His patriotic dedication to his country stood as an enduring example to all who knew him.
Gordon also worked for Corhart Refractories, dedicating over 26 years to the company before his retirement in 1999, as the Melting Department Manager.
Even in retirement Gordon kept busy spending incalculable time helping friends and family, particularly his kids, with home improvement projects. Whether it was coming up with solutions to issues or swinging a hammer building a fence, he was always willing to help and share his knowledge. When not active, Gordon was an avid reader of military and American history, as well as a member in the Heaven Bound Sunday School class at Crestwood United Methodist Church. He also loved speaking with family and friends, always proactively reaching out to hear how people were doing.
Gordon was known not only for his hard work and leadership but also for his steadfast love for his family. A man of great integrity and quiet strength, he adored spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and dogs, all of whom brought joy to his life daily.
Gordon’s cherished memory will live on through his wife of 60 years, Barbara Thorsen Stanley; his children, Leigh-Anne McClure (Greg), Robert Stanley (Holli), and Donna Moser (Shane); his grandchildren, Tyson, Hayden, Madison, Taylor, Angela, Connor, Logan, and Brooklyn (Ian) along with their children Graham and Sylas. He is also survived by his devoted brother, Charles “Chip” Stanley, as well as his beloved extended family and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert Stanley and Marguerite Thompson Phelan, and his brother, Lawrence “Larry” Phelan.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Heady-Radcliffe Funeral Home, 706 W. Jefferson St, LaGrange, KY, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 PM.
