Richard “Rich” Coleman Clausen passed away peacefully in his home on August 8th, 2022 at age 77. Born on April 18th, 1945 to Alvine and John Elbert Clausen, Rich grew up in Skylight, Kentucky. He attended Liberty Elementary School, and graduated from Oldham County High School in 1963, where he met his beloved wife, Lucy. He briefly attended Western Kentucky University prior to marrying his high school sweetheart in 1965. Rich enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1966 where he was stationed in San Antonio, TX, Biloxi, MS, Wichita, KS, and Clark Air Force Base in Manilla, Philippines. After his military service, Rich returned to his old Kentucky home where he and Lucy raised three beautiful children on their farm “Cedar Rock Farm” in Shelbyville, KY. Rich worked for BellSouth Phone Company from 1970 until he retired in 2001 and opened a bed and breakfast at Cedar Rock Farm. After serving their final guests, Rich and Lucy returned to Oldham County and lived out their retirement fulfilling their bucket list wishes which included traveling to all 50 states, 7 continents, tons of cruises, and many more sights in between. Rich was an active member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, and he loved to sing in the church choir. Rich’s final days were spent surrounded by family in his home in LaGrange, KY.
Rich was an incredibly kind and generous man, who, above all, knew how to connect with people. He could walk into a room and immediately see how he could help. His jokes, stories, smiles, and sage advice touched everyone he met. Rich knew how to make everyone feel important, loved, and welcome. It was his magic.
Rich loved warm weather, old cars and trucks, forests, barns, art, beaches, happy hours, his little red Miata, bonfires, God, and Tom T. Hall. He loved chocolate, hot sauce, spoonfuls of honey, anything fried, bourbon, and a cold Negra Modelo. Rich loved fishing, mowing grass, bailing hay, traveling, reading, knitting, sous cheffing, yelling at sporting events, fixing things, kitchen dancing, and porch sitting. But most of all, Rich loved his wife, children, grandchildren,
friends, and family.
Rich is preceded in death by his mother and father Alvine and John Elbert Clausen, his sister, Harriett Clausen, and his dearest friend, Tom (Jan) Morgan. Left to share his stories are his loving wife of 57 years, Lucy Clausen; his three children, Louise, John (Anna), and Richard (Sally) Clausen; his siblings, Betsy (David) Logsdon, Thomas (Judy) Clausen, and Howard Clausen Jr.; his six grandchildren, Rachel (Sushant) Tobe, Emma Tobe, Dustin Clausen, Taylor Clausen, Ella Clausen, and Coleman Clausen and his first great-grandchild, Avi Kaura.
Visitation services will be held at Heady-Radcliffe Funeral Home and Cremation Services in LaGrange, KY on Thursday, August 11th from 3-7PM. A memorial service will be held at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church in Centerfield, KY on Friday, August 12th at 6PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations or gifts be made in Rich’s name to Mount Tabor United Methodist Church in Centerfield, KY or the Kentucky United Methodist Children’s Home.
