Alpheus Hendrix (Al) Hall, Jr., of Austin, Texas was born on January 21, 1948 in Fort Worth, Texas to Alpheus Hendrix Hall, Sr. and Golden Fay Rose Hall and died in Temple, Texas on Sunday, March 20, 2011 after a forty-two year battle with various forms of cancer and was predeceased by his father and half brother, Robert Hall, of Denver, Colorado. He is survived by his wife of thirty-two years, Rita Kloss Hall; brother, Ronald Vincent Hall, of Austin; mother, of Austin; and numerous family members and friends. His family moved to Austin from Waco, after living in Terrell and Fort Worth.
Hall graduated from Lanier High School in Austin and the University of Texas in Austin with a BA in English. He had been accepted into a PhD program at the University of Chicago when cancer intervened. Though Hall never accomplished that educational goal, he continued to pursue a love of learning throughout life. In the spirit of the Renaissance and the Jeffersonian model, Hall's interests extended to many fields. He expressed those interests and ideas as a gifted writer, to the delight of many.
Hall's love of history combined with love of family revealed itself in his service as president and annual speaker at the Hall Family Reunion, 1990 through 2008. His love of Biblical truth and his natural gift as an educator was made manifest when he became one of the speakers at the church he attended, 2002 until 2010. Hall had retained knowlege of classical Greek from his UT days. At his death, he was studying Hebrew and pursuing a master’s degree at the Austin Graduate School of Theology.
Hall embodied the ethos of the warrior/poet, which served him well in his long struggle, beginning at age 21. The warrior in him fought; the poet in him elevated his spirit and those around him.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at Weed-Corley-Fish Lake Travis Chapel followed by a reception in the Magnolia Room.
The family asks that memorial contributions be made to: Austin Graduate School of Theology, 7640 Guadalupe Street, Austin, Texas 78752.
