Indranie Weerakoon, aged 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on 7th June 2025 in Austin, Texas. Born in 1930 in Kandy, Sri Lanka, Indranie’s life was shaped by a rich educational journey. She attended the Mahamaya Buddhist Girls School and the Kandy Convent School for Girls. After graduating from the latter, she embarked on a unique educational experience at the Montessori school campus of St. Bridget’s College in Colombo, where she had the privilege of studying under the visionary Dr. Maria Montessori.
Upon completing her AMI Montessori diploma, Indranie returned to Kandy and dedicated herself to teaching as a Montessori educator at the Kandy High School. Indranie was an incredibly caring person and worked passionately as a Montessori teacher. To expand on her hobbies, Indranie attended a sewing course at Kathleen School of Dressmaking and enrolled in Chandra Dissanayake’s culinary school.
In 1950, Indranie met her soon-to-be husband, Jayati, and they married in December 1951. Together, they built a loving family of four children, with Indranie taking on the primary role of managing all aspects of their household. Her warm and caring nature extended beyond her family. She was an avid gardener, a talented cook, and skilled entertainer and host, always eager and excited to welcome friends and family with open arms. She loved bringing people together and was known for the joy and warmth of the gatherings she hosted.
In the early 1970s, Indranie and Jayati chose to educate their children abroad. Indranie took the lead in finding a job opportunity where she could excel. She found such an opportunity and immigrated to the US, moving to Minneapolis in June 1973. There, she became the teacher in charge of a Montessori school campus in Dinkytown, Minneapolis. Her exceptional teaching and leadership skills were soon recognized by the owner of La Pepiniere Montessori School, and Indranie was appointed as the Director of La Pepiniere Montessori from 1974 to 1985. In July 1985, Indranie moved to Wichita, Kansas, where she served as the Director of the Wichita Montessori Primary School. She was affectionately known to her colleagues as “The Princess,” being an approximate translation of her name, Indranie. As a teacher, she was also a compassionate listener, always offering her support to families she taught and making time and effort to help with any challenges they faced.
After retiring as a teacher, Indranie and Jayati moved to Austin in 2017 to be closer to their children who were living there. Even in her retirement, she commanded the household with a combination of rigor and kindness. Indranie was a loving wife, a nurturing mother and grandmother, and a caring friend. She was the guiding force of the family, whose strength and care shaped the path to their shared success, always with a smile that reflected her warmth. She is survived by her daughter Rekha, three sons, Asanga, Mithra, and Ishta; son-in-law Bushy, daughters-in-law, Anusha, Namal, and Gretchen; and seven grandchildren; Gayan, Rayshan, Dilkushi, Leonie, Sitara, Nikhil, and Milani.
