Born in Quanah, Texas, Keith Dee Thorp lived a life marked by curiosity, intellect, and a dedication to both his work and family. He passed away peacefully on February 21, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of knowledge, kindness, and generosity.
Keith pursued his love for science by earning degrees in Physics and Mathematics from Texas Tech University. His career took him to the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., where he studied celestial mechanics, the intricate dance of planetary orbits. It was there that he met his beloved wife, Elaine Bernard Thorp. His work later led him to White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, where he contributed to weapons system testing for the Department of Defense. Returning to Washington, D.C., he continued his service in military operations research. The final fourteen years of his distinguished career were spent as a Senior Fellow at the National War College and Armed Services Staff College, where he mentored future military leaders with his deep expertise.
Beyond his professional life, Keith had a passion for genealogy and astronomy, subjects he enthusiastically explored and shared with others. Even in his later years, he remained dedicated to education, teaching genealogy classes at Lake Travis Independent Living, where he resided for the past eight years.
Keith is survived by his son, Christopher Paul Thorp, and his daughter-in-law, Corinne Kara Thorp, of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by his grandsons, Russell Thorp and William Thorp, who are continuing their education at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas at San Antonio, respectively.
Those who knew Keith will remember him as a knowledgeable and well-spoken man who was always eager to share what he had learned. His generosity of spirit and lifelong commitment to intellectual pursuits leave a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A private memorial will be held in his honor. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a cause that brings joy and hope to children in need.
