Mara was born on April 13, 1956 to Bob Kasper and Marlene Kasper in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Her father was in the Air Force, so she moved a lot with her four siblings, Renee Picanso, Robert Kasper, Alan Kasper, and Paula Nemec. She graduated from Austin Reagan High School in 1974 and then attended Texas A&M University, where she majored in accounting. At A&M, she was an honor student receiving her accounting degree in December 1977. She met her future husband, Marcus Winkler, while attending A&M.
After graduation, she began her career in Dallas working for accounting firm Arthur Young. She received her CPA license while working there. She then worked the remainder of her career for Mitchell Energy in The Woodlands, Texas from 1980 to 2012, with her last position as Assistant Controller.
Mara and Marcus were married on June 9, 1979 and began their life together in the Houston, Texas area. They were married for 46 years. Together they raised a son, Dr. Craig Winkler, born in 1985. Craig was married in 2014 to Taylor Weber and they subsequently had three beautiful daughters; Olivia, Ava, and Lola.
Mara and Marcus spent the remainder of their working careers in the Houston, Texas area. In 2017 they retired to their Lake Travis condo in Spicewood, Texas. Mara loved spending time with her son's family, especially her three granddaughters. She also loved entertaining family and friends at the lake, attending A&M football games, water skiing, boating, country western dancing, Junior League, travel and sunbathing at the pool.
