Born to Joan W. and William B. Van Buren III, Patty was raised in New Jersey and Pennsylvania with a sister and two brothers. She had a happy childhood and especially cherished her summers on Long Beach Island, NJ.
Patty graduated from Watchung Hills Regional High School in 1972, where she was an excellent student and a cheerleader. She attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where she graduated with a BA in Psychology in 1976.
Patty's early career was in health and human services, working with troubled youth and autistic children. She returned to graduate school and earned a Master in Social Work (MSSW) from The University of Texas at Austin in 1994.
Later in her career, Patty moved into auditing and contract management, including a three-year stint as a US Postal Inspector. For the past 20 years, Patty worked for Travis County Health and Human Services and later at Austin-Bergstrom Airport as Manager of Internal Audit. She retired in October of 2015.
Patty met John Almond in 2000 and they were married in 2004. They built a very happy home together in The Hills of Lakeway and enjoyed many beautiful trips together.
Patty's greatest joys in life were gardening, fine art, traveling to see interesting places around the world, and enjoying so many special times with her family and dearest friends.
We will dearly miss Patty's kindness, sharp mind, optimism, sense of fun, and her cheerful, loving nature. She will also be remembered for the devoted care she gave her father in his final years.
Patty is survived by her husband John Almond of The Hills, Texas, stepson Jarrett Almond of The Hills, TX, stepdaughter Jana Almond of Newport Beach, CA, brother William Van Buren, his wife Donna, and daughter Kathryn, of Seattle, WA, and brother Richard Van Buren, his wife Leslie, and sons Logan, Nick, and Derek, of Austin, TX.
She is also survived by her 3 dear cousins, Marcia Van Buren-Brown and husband Thomas Brown of New York, NY, Cynthia Van Buren of Palm Beach, FL, and Robert Van Buren and partner Robyn Saros of North Beach, NJ.
Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 19th at The Lakeway Church, 2203 Lakeway Blvd., Lakeway, TX.
