Roberta “Bert” Elenora McGough passed away peacefully on March 24, 2025, being comforted by her family. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 20, 1937, she is preceded in death by her husband, Leo J. McGough; parents, Thomas and Rebecca Rudkin; and brothers, John, Kenneth, and Donald; and sister, Anna. Bert grew up in Laurel, Maryland and moved to Virginia in 1970 with her husband Leo. Leo and Bert moved to Ohio in 2017 and then Bert moved with her daughter and son-in-law to Austin, Texas in 2022.
Bert is survived by her daughters Regina McGough and Letitia (James) Carwell; grandchildren, Thomas (Margaret) Carwell, Christian (Josh) Posadny, Shannon (Brad) Waddraji, and Brianne Carwell. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren: Kennedy, Ophelia, Naomi, Walter, Franklin, Desmond, and Lucille. Bert also had many nieces and nephews that she adored.
Bert graduated from Howard County High School in 1955 and began working for the United States Department of State in Washington D.C. She began her career as a member of the secretary pool and throughout her 33-year career worked with ambassadors and the visa passport office. She supported families in helping loved ones who have passed to return home to the United States.
After her retirement, Bert became a Voter Registrar in Prince William County, VA. Her dedication to community service gave her opportunities to support local, state, and national elections. She also began to enrich her creative side by taking on the hobbies of stained glass, painting, and hunting for driftwood on the beach to make walking canes. An avid reader, she was a frequent visitor to her local library. Her entire life she could be seen with a crossword puzzle in hand, but later in life she could be seen with her iPad playing scrabble, and other word games.
Her quick wit and stubborn charm will truly be missed by family, friends, and everyone who got to meet her. Bert will be interned with her husband Leo in Stonelick Township, Ohio.
