Born to Melvin and Sarah Swindells . In Salt Lake City Utah Dorothy grew up in Salt Lake City and was baptized in 1929 in the Mormon Church.
Dorothy had 2 older sisters and 2 brothers. Due to her Mother and one brother’s ill health the family had to move to a lower elevation they chose Inglewood California.
Dorothy graduated Inglewood High School in 1938 and attended commercial college in down town Los Angeles . She worked part time at a Van De Camp bakery.
One evening in 1938 she and some of her girlfriends went to a dance at the Masa Ball room and there she met a handsome young man Bruce Flitton they dance through the night many time after that. Bruce and Dorothy were married in 1940. Bruce attended Flight Instructor training school and served in the US Air Force. Dorothy was the home maker she always wanted four children and her wish came true .The first born was a girl Dotty Lee in April 1941, Second a girl Dara Lynne 1946 then 2 boys Michael 1948 and Bruce 1957.
After Bruce’s time in the service they moved to Lancaster in 1953 and he was a flight instructor at Quartz Hill Airport. After the children were grown Dorothy went to work at Cornets, Woolworths and Savon Drug store.
Dorothy loved to dance. She was voted in as the treasure of the Satin N Spurs country western dance club and served that position for 10 years .
In 1998 she won Lancaster’s Senior of the year that award was for the service given to others in time of need. Dorothy has spent the last 32 years at home with her daughter Dara and her husband Jeff. She had two other adopted families children that were like her own the Hitchcock’s Georgia and Daniel and the Bonfillio’s Chris and Mallory who she cared for from a young age and loved like her own.
She enjoyed playing the nickel slots in Vegas and watching Family Feud and Jeopardy.
Being the matriarch of the Flitton family . She is survived daughter Dara Martin (Jeff) Michael Flitton (Terri). 11 grandchildren Jack, Darlene, David, Lisa, Jason, Scott, Bruce and Amber. Great grandchildren Brandon, Jarrod, Megan, Emilee, Bruce lll Melanie, Vince, Joseph, Samantha ,Devin, Ryan ,Brianna ,Erin, 6 great Great Great Grandchildren Karsyn, Kaylee, Chloe, Madison, Isaac, one girl of Devin’s . Dorothy was preceded in death by her spouse Bruce C. Flitton, Daughter Dotty Graham, Son Bruce R. Flitton Granddaughter Teshia Humphreys, Grandson Arron (Matt) Graham and Baby Shawn Flitton .
Her Favorite things are Butterflies and the colors purple and lavender.
Memorial Services will be held Thursday March 9th at 10:00 a.m. 2017 at Joshua Memorial Chapel Joshua Lancaster, California.
