Gene was a soft-spoken man, loving, caring, kind and generous. He was always smiling with a twinkle in his eye and showed love to everyone that he met. He was a devout Catholic who dedicated his life to his wife and family.
Gene was born April 28, 1930, in Oklahoma City, OK and was raised by his grandmother Esther Barclay, after his mother passed away when he was 12. Gene joined the Navy in 1951 and served as an airplane mechanic in San Diego and Whidbey Island, Washington. He proudly served in the Korean War.
In 1957, Gene gambled at Hollywood Park and won having met the love of his life and wife, Harriett Ann Stevens (Allen). They were married on June 21, 1958 and have been married for 63 years. At many family gatherings and as our family grew, we would often say this was all “because two people fell in love”.
Gene worked for North American on the Saturn rockets for the Mercury and Apollo programs and ultimately the Space Shuttle as an aerospace engineer moving his family to Lancaster, CA in 1976. Gene retired in 1990 from Rockwell International.
Gene and Harriett raised 5 children: Katheryn (Carlos Herrera), Theresa (Juan Duarte), Deborah, Mark (Robin) and Matthew (Dana). He was a grandfather to 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Gene had a passion for baseball and enjoyed coaching his children, his favorite pastime was watching the Angels. He also shared his love of travel with his family, the Elks and many close friends.
His family will treasure each of the cherished moments and memories, as he was a wonderful and devoted husband, father, and Papa. His legacy of goodwill, honor and love will live on for generations to come.
