When I was in elementary school, my dad would drop me off at Lola’s house every night for a sleepover because my parents worked the night shift and there was no one to look after me. I remember arriving a little early, just before Lolo had to get ready for his own night shift. I’d hear him snoring when I walked in, then he’d wake up, brush his teeth, and put on his very distinct cologne which is the kind you could smell from the other end of the house. Lola would hand him his lunch bag and kiss him goodbye. Sometimes Lolo would crack a joke and Lola would laugh or get mad, depends how lolo delivers the joke.

Once he left for work, it would just be me and Lola. We’d play solitaire or a Filipino card game together until one of us got sleepy. Then we’d fall asleep next to each other until my dad would come from work in the morning to pick me up for school.

We shared so many stories. I’d make her laugh with corny jokes I learned from TFC, and she’d tell me about her life in the Philippines like about her surviving the Japanese occupation during World War II. Some nights we’d just watch TV, and other nights I’d fall asleep right after Lolo left because I was already sleepy. I think the smell of Lola’s bedsheets is what helped me sleep so well. I don’t know if it was her detergent mixed with Salonpas, but it was so distinct. I’ve never been able to find that smell anywhere else. Still, I always looked forward to being dropped off at Lola’s house. This went on the entire school year.

Today, I still have the exact deck of red playing cards we used. They’re bent and worn from all the shuffling. I also have one of her blankets that still carries her familiar scent. These are the things I wanted most to keep from her, and I will cherish them forever.

I love you so much, Lola. I know you’re in heaven now with Lolo. And I hope that one day, we’ll play cards together again.
