Wilfred H. Bowers was born on May 3, 1927 in Buffalo, New York, to parents Roswell Parker Bowers and Else Johanna Wilhelmina Bowers. After serving in the Navy he pursued a degree in mathematics, eventually became a rocket engineer, and worked for Bell Aircraft, Rocketdyne, Genge, and ultimately the rocket site at Edwards Air Force Base where he retired in 1987. He is a lifetime member of both the American Legion, and the Elks, where he is a Past Exalted Ruler and former State Vice President. He also served as Secretary of the Lancaster Elks Lodge BPOE #1625 for many years. He survived both his first wife Norma Irene Evarts who passed away in 1983, and his second wife Joan Karen Reed who passed away in 2018. He is survived by his daughters Sharon Bowers of Lancaster, CA, Marcia Oaks of Hemet, CA, Lynn Bowers and Gail Smith of Henderson, NV, as well as his sister Esther Anderson of Kankakee, Il. Wilfred loved watching the Dodgers, and even relocated from NY to LA the same year as the boys in blue. Growing up he played first baseman. He enjoyed playing in bridge tournaments at work. Wilfred, intelligent and analytical, looked forward to solving crossword puzzles and unscrambling word jumbles in the newspaper everyday, and later in life enjoyed solving puzzles and listening to Frank Sinatra on Alexa devices. He loved his daily coffee and cookies or dessert, and was great with dogs. He remained in remarkable health throughout most of his 90s. He passed peacefully in his sleep early Saturday morning while on hospice care in the comfort of his own home and bed.
There will be a Life of Celebration at the Elks Lodge after the Graveside Service.
