

Armond J. Merluzzi passed away September 1, 2016 after an extended illness. He was born May 5, 1929 to Paul and Teresa Merluzzi in Syracuse, N.Y. Armond was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Christine, who has been his partner in life and business for over 60 years. Armond was a 56 year resident of Las Vegas where he began his career as a manager of both New York Meats and Schulman Meats. He was the owner of Merluzzi Flyers Gymnastics and co-founder of Merluzzi Dance Center with Christine over 47 years ago. He was also a long time Board member of the Italian American Club and Founded the Las Vegas IAC Bocce League. In addition, he was an avid sports fan especially golf, bowling, Bocce Ball and any games “with action!” Both Armond and Christine were 30 plus year donors to the UNLV Rebel Athletic Scholarship Fund and were one of the very first to select their seats in the brand new Thomas and Mack Center in 1983. Armond enjoyed competing in many Bocce Ball and bowling tournaments throughout the western U.S. He also enjoyed traveling with the Merluzzi Flyers Gymnastic teams throughout the west. The Flyers hosted many State and National tournaments that featured Bela Karolyi, Bart Conner and Olympian Scott Keswick. He was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, Paul and Alex Merluzzi; and his five sisters, Sue, Rita and Gina Merluzzi, Margaret Massaro and Ann Leo. Armond is also survived by daughters, Linda Belew (Tony) and Marisa Sanderson (Doug); grandchildren Casey Ziegert (Jaclyn), Janelle Castillo (Mackenzie), Coby Belew and Zachary Sanderson; Step-grandchildren, Dana Nichols (Dustin) and Rian Sanderson (Amy); step great- grandchildren, Drew, Drake, Reid and Elliot. The “loves” of his life were his two recent great grandchildren Chloe Castillo and Kaden Ziegert. In addition, Armond is survived by his sister Mary Bombard; brothers, Tony Merluzzi (Debra Wade) and Alfred Merluzzi (Mary Ann); nephew, Daniel Leo, and his niece, Valerie Shaw and extend family throughout the country. A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 8th from 5-7pm at Palm South Jones Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89146. The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 9th at 10am at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church, 3050 Alta Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89107. Armond will be laid to rest at Palm Northwest Cemetery, 6701 N. Jones Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89131.
