Barry was born as Neto Lee Caceres on December 27,1935 in Detroit, Michigan to Ernesto Falcon “Ernie” Caceres and Virginia “Gina” Lee Caceres (Romeo). Barry’s father, Ernie, was a famous musician who played clarinet and baritone saxophone with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Barry’s mother, Gina, was a dancer and a homemaker. Barry’s name was changed from “Neto” to “Barry” when he was six years old after the “Barry Saxophone” that Ernie was famous for playing.
At a young age the family moved to New York City where Barry was raised by his parents, his grandmother, Rose Lee “Mitzi” Romeo (Quaratino) and the streets of the energetic city he roamed and explored. Barry developed a love of music (especially singing) and sports. In his adolescence he sang in a group on the street corner in Manhattan, he later worked at Capitol Records rubbing shoulders with some of the greats and continued to sing on stage and in clubs when given the opportunity. At 11 years old, Barry got to participate in a Yankees team practice and met the players, he was a bench player on his high school’s 1950 NYC championship basketball team and eventually worked as a sports handicapper in his later years using his vast knowledge of sports and analytical mind to handicap contests with extraordinary skill. Watching a game with Barry was always a treat — he always knew more about the players, coaches and teams than the announcers calling the game.
Barry’s true love was his family. He had his first son Andre Kean Caceres in 1961 with his first wife Francine. The couple divorced in 1965, but Barry married again in 1969 to Luciana and they were together for nearly 54 years until his passing. Barry and Luciana had two sons. Keith Alan Caceres was born in 1973 and Barry Mark Caceres in 1974. Barry loved family get togethers with his wife, children and grandchildren and would always share his many stories from his life.
