Benita passed away at home with her husband by her side after a
16-year battle with Frontal Temporal Dementia.
Benita is survived by her husband of 54 years, Ed Comfort.
They were married in Elkton, Maryland on April 26th, 1969.
She is also survived by her niece Barbra and grandnephew Nick
as well as her cousins on the Passanante, Heller, Reardon and Nicotera
side of the family.
After graduation, Benita worked as a proofreader and type setter for TrenTypo in New Jersey for 10 years. Afterward she worked at Super Fresh until moving to Las Vegas in 1993.
Benita enjoyed working as an Usher for Mandalay Bay Casino. She enjoyed many of the concerts and especially liked ushering Vegas boxing.
In Remembrance
Benita enjoyed Vegas, there was so much to see and so many buffets.
Her heart was always back home in Pennsylvania though, where she missed being with her friends and family.
One of the best things she missed was coffee night with the Girls.
She loved it when nieces, nephews and their friends would come to the house. She especially enjoyed taking the kids on adventures like skiing or boating. Even nonrelatives would call her Aunt Benita.
Benita always had a way of making people laugh, mostly unintentionally.
We were watching football not long after “instant replay” came out.
Our team just scored on a pass play from the 20-yard line. Everybody was cheering, then they showed the instant replay. When Benita saw it, she said, look at those idiots, they fell for the same play again!
Even though Benita wasn’t an outdoor person she was always ready to try anything. Everything from camping to whitewater rafting, skiing and even golf! Unfortunately, on the first lesson, she swung the club and on the back swing it came out of her hands striking the instructor. It was shortly after that she took up bowling.
Benita grew to love Las Vegas!
Shortly after moving into our first home, she met her first best friend,
Theresa Williford. Her, her daughter Lauren and Husband Mike were
our neighbors for 3 years. As a Military family they had to move to North Carolina but have continued to stay in touch over the years.
Theresa gave Benita companionship and helped her cope with being away from family. She acquainted Benita with the City of Vegas and how to get around. So much so, that when we had to go anywhere, Benita was the navigator.
She also made a lifelong friendship with our across the street neighbors, Kathy and Jeff Dunn. Not only were they neighbors in the first home, when they moved to this neighborhood, we moved next door to them. We have been friends for over 25 years. They recently moved to Tennessee.
Of course, being Benita, she began making new friends as new neighbors moved in. She always made it a point to introduce herself to everyone.
She became Best Friends with Dorthy and her two daughters Alicia and Courtney as well as Don, her husband. The girls became Benita’s adopted Daughters. They kept her company and were our go to babysitters and house watchers whenever we left the house or went on vacation.
Benita was not able to have children, but she was the best Mom any Fur Baby could ask for. As she started losing her faculties, her concern was for the protection of her puppy. When someone would reach to pet Mini, Benita would sternly tell them “Don’t you hurt my Madison”!
One of the biggest aides to adjusting to the Vegas move was the support we received from Pat and Joe Cole. The owners of Cole Industries moved us out here to help establish the company. They always included us in their celebrations of holidays and family affairs, making us feel like family.
My Brother Tom was incredible. He arranged through the LDS church to find two of the best people I have ever met to help care for Benita.
Sister Gloria Anderson and Sister Ellen Holley came to the house twice a week for the past 10 years. Taking over the feeding, bathing, and comforting of Benita through all stages of the degenerative affliction. Without their support for Benita and myself, I doubt that I would have been able to care for her on my own. I will always be indebted to them for their kindness. I also thank their husbands Bruce and Dan for their support.
Final thought
Benita and I always had fun together. Through good times and bad she somehow always managed to stick by me and for that I am truly grateful.
She made me a better man and with perseverance a better husband.
She will live and be loved in my heart forever.
Fairwell Benita, May God take care of you for now.
Love Ed
