

Betty Jean Williams Jewel, 84, of North Las Vegas, Nev., passed from this life on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at Mountain View Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nev. Betty Jean was born on April 17, 1939, in Wilkesboro. After graduating from Lincoln Heights High School in 1955, she continued on to Clark College in Atlanta, Ga., where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1963, she continued on to the UConn School of Social Work in Hartford, Conn., earning her Master of Social Work degree.
Betty Jean worked for the Hartford Neighborhood Center of Hartford, Conn., as a youth social worker from 1963-1967. In 1967, she moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where she worked for the Los Angeles County Department of Adoption, Community Development and Health Services. From 1967-1993, she worked as an adoption worker, Service Center director and a health services analyst. She also was active in many community and social activities.
Betty Jean retired in 1993 and moved to Raleigh, where she resided until moving to North Las Vegas, Nev., in 2000. While living in Las Vegas, Betty Jean had the opportunity to serve as an “extra” in movies, as well a substitute teacher in the Clark County School System. Finally, she selflessly served the homeless veterans of Las Vegas.
Betty Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Campbell and Glennola Williams, and two siblings, Miles and Billy. She was a loving mother and leaves behind her beloved son, Kenneth “Kenny” Eric Jewel of Carson, Calif. Betty Jean is gone but not forgotten. She will be missed and will live on in the hearts of many relatives and friends.
