Chuck was born on October 24, 1933 at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. His parents were John Wesley and Laura May Harrell; however, Laura’s dear friends Frank and Myrtle Osborne raised him in Metairie, Louisiana. He had two older brothers, Bob and Richard, however, he and his brothers were raised apart and only truly reconnected in the past 20 years. Many years ago Chuck made a long delayed trip back to New Orleans to visit his brothers and meet their very large extended families. He always spoke fondly of his nephews and nieces and all of their families with whom he kept in touch with via e-mail.
Chuck was a retired Marine. He was in the Air Wing. While stationed in Hawaii, he met Rose Hosino; they later married on January 8, 1955. After a short time out of the corps and back in New Orleans, Chuck returned to active duty. He and Rose had 2 children, Charlie and Susan, and were stationed at Hawaii and North Carolina before being settled at USMCAS El Toro in California.
Chuck traveled the world, mostly as an avionics chief with the 3rd MAW.
Overseas tours included Guantanamo Bay, Vietnam, Okinawa, Subic Bay;
stateside he was mostly in Yuma, AZ and Fallon, NV. M.Sgt. Harrell retired
from the Marine Corps after approximately 25 years of service.
After retiring from the Marine Corps, he became a Realtor and Real Estate Broker. He sold real estate in Orange County for approximately 10 years; when Rose retired, they moved to Nevada.
. In retirement, his favorite pursuits were communicating with his family and friends via email. He loved learning, educating himself in areas of history, current events, people and the stock market. Chuck was content to enjoy his favorite pastimes alone, but was also willing to share his interests with others. Politically, Chuck was someone who liked to hear both sides of the political debates, decided a position, and stick with it.
Chuck passed away on August 8, 2011 at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. He died from respiratory complications after open heart surgery. He is survived by his children, Charlie and Susan (Bill); his granddaughters, Heather (Chris), and Melanie; his great grandchildren, Matthew and Lily. Services were held at Palm Mortuary, 1600 South Jones Boulevard in Las Vegas, Nevada. Chuck was laid to rest in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada.
To those who knew him, Charles was a loving husband, a caring father, a steadfast friend. He lived honestly and honorably - thorough in work, thoughtful in word and action, considerate in society. He will be missed.
