Hey, Uncle -

All of us remember you the same way - laughing, laughing and laughing,  Your kindness and humor was always a beacon of light for us: whether it be while grilling, you chastising me about my lack of car maintenance, getting the boys to try pina coladas, or talking football and reliving the OJ car chase.  Although silly, wonton soup has been changed forever as you shared your love and caring with our family.   We trade your stories and tears stream from our eyes crying now with both sadness but more so laughter.  You will be missed, but we will be together again.   Until then, God bless you and Aunt Elsa. Uncle, you are the second godfather Adam and I have lost since our wedding, and we will miss you just as much as everyone else here will miss you.  But we know that you are now in a better place and reunited with your parents and siblings once again. 

Uncle, we give you our word that we will always look after Auntie Elsa for you—no matter where we are in this world.  Even though you left her mind, you will never leave her heart as she loves you just as much as you love her.  This is not a goodbye, but a see you later; and we will see you again.   As Salvation Army always says to people who have passed on: “Let us rejoice, for Uncle Cres has just been promoted to glory!”

We love you, Uncle Cres, and you will always be forever in our hearts—

I wrote this since Uncle passed.  It’s very therapeutic to be able to muster up all your feelings with a pen and paper.  In this case, with the Notes app and the iPhone’s tiny keyboard.

I will always remember Uncle Cres as this very loud, happy-go-lucky, easygoing, cheerful guy who would mow the lawn topless and wear wifebeaters in the winter because he was warm; who would pick on Auntie Elsa to show his love and affection for her; and who would cook my favorite angel hair pesto, or I call it the “green pasta,” for every time I visit them and then he’d put it in a tupperware so I can take with me to college.  I believe my cousins will agree with me when I say that he is our second father, and  we’re blessed to have spent time together: be it in New York, or in Las Vegas.  

Uncle, there are so many things I am extremely grateful for: for offering your home when the decision was made for me to attend high school in New York; for looking past my 70s in Algebra and for being extremely proud of my 100+s in my other classes; for being one of my driving instructors when I first learned how to drive even though you told me to make the left turn but pointing to your right; for visiting potential colleges with me and my cousins and then ended up attending there; for following me halfway on Route 45, signaled and flashed your headlights at me to pull over on the side street as smoke came out of my front hood, and then called 9-1-1 because my car was on fire; for welcoming my and my cousins’ friends into your home and treated them as your own; for being my sounding board when you and Auntie Elsa asked why I called off my first engagement; for introducing us to the words, “lakay” and “baket,” and how we should use it to our spouses; for agreeing to be our godfather at our weddings and your grandkids’ christenings; and most especially, for being so supportive and encouraging of all our endeavors with no judgments, no pressure, and no pretenses.

Hi, Uncle

Although they were simple, my family always holds dear the same memories: you laughing while grilling, making us wonton soup, talking about the football game and lecturing me on my lack of car care.  I am still bad with car maintenance, but still think of you whenever I have to top off my fluids or talk about OJs car chase.  You were always the first to pick up the boys, making them laugh and having them try pina coladas.   And making friends where ever we went...like everyone on the cruise to Bermuda. Dearest Uncle,

You left us too soon, before we could tell you how special you are to all of us.  I will always remember you with fondness and with gratitude because you showed such kindness to everyone you met.  In particular, I deeply admire the respect you gave elders and how helpful you always were to both my parents and the whole Dumlao family.

May you still be giggling in Heaven, free of every suffering, and enjoying every blessing.

In my heart and mind I always hear Uncle Cres giggling and I see him smiling and laughing joyfully.  He shared his joy endlessly through jokes and stories.  

And I remember the tenderness of Uncle's heart.  He would become teary-eyed hearing of the accomplishments of each and every one of us nieces and nephews.  We are so lucky to have known you and to have shared time on this earth with you and Auntie.  We love you so much and will always remember you fondly.
