I think of Dan every December because it is his birth month. Now I find that it is his death month, as well. My name is Elaine. Dan and I met in Nutrition
Class at Eastern Michigan University, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in 1975 or ‘76. We were lovers, briefly, but that was not the essence, the important part of our relationship. We were friends, and we got each other through nursing school. He had been a medical corpsman in the military; he was experienced and confident clinically, as I was not. I had writing skills that came in handy when we stayed up all night writing nursing care plans before getting ready for clinical at various hospitals around southeastern Michigan. When we graduated from EMU Nursing School, in August of 1978,  we both got jobs at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor- he in Rehab, and I in Respiratory ICU. After a year, he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Rantoul, IL. I moved to Los Angeles and got a job  in the Medical ICU at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, I worked there from December of 1979 to November of 1989. We saw each other only twice after that, when he was working  at a prison in northern  CA, and, as he told me, playing chess with Charles Manson.
Dan was a good man who’d had an extremely difficult life. His sense of humor was legendary.  It was  his main coping mechanism, and it served him well. To me, he is an unforgettable character and one of the most important, loving souls I have ever  met. I thought that he may have passed on by now, but didn’t dream it was as long ago as 2015. You have my deepest sympathy. He was an extraordinary person.

Did Dan go to nursing school at Eastern Michigan University? If so, this is very sad for me to read. I have been trying to find Dan for years, but was unsuccessful. Dan and I were good friends and colleagues while in nursing school. Nursing school was grueling and having Dan as a friend made it bearable. I took him home with me for Christmas one year because he wasn’t planning to do anything special. Nursing school was 45 years ago but I think I see Dan in the photographs provided. God bless. 

Dan and I were best friends in high school and beyond.  We spent a lot of time together through the years.  When he lived in Plymouth, MI, I used to pick him up at his apartment and drive him to Wayne Memorial High School in the evenings so he could get his GED and go on to nursing school.  He used to spend many a weekend with the wife and I.  We used to fish and camp together.  Dan flew me out to California to be his best man at his first wedding.  
It's probably been 25 years since we've heard from Dan.   I had no idea what had happened to him.  I tried searching for him on the internet many times with no luck.  I was sorry to see that his obituary was how I would find him but it comforts me to see that it looks like he had a loving wife and family.  That's what he always wanted.   I am so sorry for all of your family's loss.



Sorry for your loss.  I was Daniels first cousin from Michigan. My Dad was Daniels uncle. Daniels father and my father were brothers.

my name is Jack Carpenter my father was Bruces brother.my mother tried for years to find Bruces children but did not have the resources that are available today.even tho we have never met i would like you to know you have my deepest sympathy at the loss of Daniel . Daniel was a first cousin. His father Bruce and my Dad Jack were brothers. Sadly I never got to know Daniel or any of his siblings except Liz. May you RIP cousin.

I am so sorry for your loss, he has a beautiful family. My name is Jill Carpenter, my grandfather was Jack Carpenter Bruce's brother. My Dad Jack would be Daniel's first cousin. ?May your heart and soul find peace and comfort.

Sorry for your loss and unfortunately we never met but I'm the son of kevin carpenter and jack carpenter who is Bruce carpenters brother was my grandfather.

To the Carpenter Family,
I am so sorry for your loss of Daniel. Unfortunately, I never met him. But I am his half-sister. We share the same father. I was born in Detroit in 1952. I only was able to locate one of my Carpenter siblings through Daniel's obituary. I am so sorry for all of his family's loss.
