December 13, 1947 – June 21, 2025
Las Vegas, Nevada
David “Dave” Stanton Brown, age 77, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 21, 2025, surrounded by close friends in his home in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Dave was the beloved son of Bernard “Bernie” and Charlotte Brown and grew up in San Diego, California, where he developed a lifelong love for surfing and football. He continued playing football in college at Long Beach State, an experience that culminated in the honor of playing in the Rose Bowl in December 1970.
In 1968, he married Donna Marie Kelley, and together they raised three daughters Kathleen, Summer, and Heather. Dave coached football at Bellflower High School until 1979, when the family relocated to Cottage Grove, Oregon. There, he became the head football coach and embarked on a brief but memorable adventure in farming. In 1985, Dave returned to Southern California and resumed coaching at Bellflower High School. He married his second wife, Robin Rae Roemer, in 1994, and they welcomed a son, Trever, in 1995. Dave cherished being near the ocean again and embraced fatherhood with joy.
In 1997, Dave founded his own mortgage company, helping others achieve the dream of homeownership. Years later, he shifted his focus to healthy living, launching a blog in 2015 about staying active and eating well. He was passionate and curious researching longevity, nutrition, and lifestyle with the same determination he brought to all of life’s chapters.
Dave returned to teaching full-time in 2020 at Canyon Springs High School in Las Vegas and commented in recent years that it gave him purpose.
An adventurer at heart, Dave spent his summers exploring, hiking and camping in the Colorado mountains, snorkelling in Bonaire, and wandering the streets of London. He made spring break trips to Guaymas, Mexico and loved discovering new hiking trails around Las Vegas. After much persuasion from family, he finally invested in a Garmin GPS device to ensure he could stay connected during his solo treks.
A defining moment in Dave’s life came on November 19, 1983, when he joined Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). He remained sober for 41 years, dedicating much of his life to supporting others on their path to recovery. He was especially active in Hospitals and Institutions, bringing the message of sobriety to those who otherwise might not have had the chance to hear it.
In the last decade of his life, Dave became a dedicated member of the Las Vegas Buddhist Sangha. He found deep meaning in spiritual practice and had recently begun teaching a class there something he was deeply excited about, combining his love for sharing and exploring his journey of self-discovery.
Dave is survived by his children Kathleen, Summer, Heather, and Trever; his granddaughters, Phoebe and Lily; his former wives, Donna and Robin; his partner, Sharleen; and his brother and sister-in-law, William and Terresa Brown along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and long-term friends. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, students, AA community, and all those whose lives he touched with his warmth, humor, and service.
In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Dave’s memory with a donation to an organization that supports individuals recovering from drug and alcohol addiction, such as Southern California Hospitals and Institutions https://www.socalhandi.com/ or American Addiction Centers https://americanaddictioncenters.org/alcohol-drug-hotline/california.
Funeral service in Las Vegas will be July 27, 2025 with another service in September/ October in San Diego. If you’re are interested in attending either of these please reach out to Summer Brown at [email protected] or Heather Brown [email protected]
