Doramae accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized. She attended the 2nd Baptist Church in Mexico, Missouri. As a young woman, Doramae met and married Arthur Baker and from this union three sons were born: Arthur William, Jr., Thomas Edward Henry, and Howard Felix. She later moved from Mexico to Des Moines, Iowa where she raised her three sons until adulthood.
In the early 60s, Doramae moved from Des Moines, Iowa to Oakland, California to help her sister, Gene and brother-in-law Melvin Swan, care for their growing family. She faithfully served at St. Cuthbert's Church in Oakland for many years. Doramae spent more than two decades working in the Oakland Public School system where she served as a classroom aide and food service worker and was well loved on the campuses of King Estates and Howard Elementary. She retired in1994.
Always interested in the development of children, Doramae spent many years after retirement assisting her granddaughter Deetra Lynn with her family daycare.
Many in the family affectionately called her Annamae, Aunt Doramae, Grandma Doramae, or simply Mae. She lived and loved well while walking through life despite some challenging times. Her love of family was evident in that all who knew her felt as though they knew her family who she talked about often. She lived out her faith and trust in God for all to bear witness. She planted seeds of hope in Christ all of her life.
On Sunday, April 16th, the Lord called her home to rest at 9:11 PM. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings: John, (Brother), Dorothy, and Emmogene; two sons Arthur and Thomas; grandson Thomas Jr, and nephew Mel Swan.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Howard (Jane), 4 grandchildren Howard (Liz), Deetra (Vincent), Raquel, and Arthur; 7 great-grandchildren Howard III, Dianna (Ryland), Vinnie, Danielle, Anthony (Sandra), T.J. and Justin; many great-great grandchildren, her nieces Karen, Karla, and Karlyn, and a host of other relatives and friends
