In Loving Memory of
 Dorothy Louise Hayden

Unfortunately, a large portion of the people who influenced my life as a young adult have passed.  The passing of my Aunt Dorothy represents the last of the great elder generation in my circle of life.  The women from this older generation all knew how to make a little go a long way.  They could all easily sew on a new patch and showed their love through the endless hours looking after our needs. The holiday season brought out their best, with deliciously cooked turkeys, pies, and bread.  I can still remember the first time I tried Aunt Dorothy’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Walnut cookies.  

When my family lived in Tucson, times were a little tough and Mom and us kids would often travel over to the home of Uncle James and Aunt Dorothy to pick up a few supplies to help hold us over for the week.  It was always an adventure going to their house.  There was often a puzzle on the table, animals to play with, and Aunt Dorothy was always working on some new craft project.  In my teenage years, my family moved to New Mexico, and I did not see Aunt Dorothy as much.  In my junior year of high school, I was surprised by a gift from Aunt Dorothy.  It was a beautiful miniature Native American headdress that was made with orange and black beads, and matching feathers.  Years later, during the time of my wedding, Aunt Dorothy gave Lainey and I a beautiful homemade wedding picture book using our wedding colors – a prized family possession.

Personally, I think it means a lot when someone spends their time and effort to make something homemade.  Moreover, Dorothy made countless homemade gifts for many other family members.  I think that speaks to her personality the best – someone who could take raw materials and create something unique.  Dorothy’s legacy is the love she passed down through her many gifts and the love and teaching she passed down to her children, grand and great-grandchildren.
