Dorothy “Dottie” Johnson (90) of Las Vegas passed peacefully from this life March 6, 2024. Born Dorothy Marie Androvich November 22, 1933 to John and Barbara Androvich in the west side of Chicago (Hinsdale) very near the settlement “Hull House” which serviced the community of recent European immigrants to which they belonged, she was the eldest of four. Dottie always relished her “bohunk”-gypsy background. She was definitely a product of the Depression, and she never took for granted the many blessings that came her way over a very full lifetime. Her faith and ability to befriend just about anyone stemmed from these early years.
In her early twenties Dottie would meet a young serviceman by the name of Robert “Bob” Johnson who would prove to be the love of her life. They were married in 1956, and began their life together in southern California, where they welcomed Timothy, Patrick, and (Michael) Casey. In 1961 they relocated to the Las Vegas Valley when Bob took a job at the Nevada Test Site. Ben and (Erin) Katie soon brought the final tally to five, and their home on Jansen Avenue would become one of the hubs of an incredible neighborhood whose members remain family to this day.
Dottie and Bob were forces to be reckoned with. They were mainstays of their parish (St. Christopher’s) and in all their children’s school and sporting activities. This would continue into the high school years, and they were prominent Bishop Gorman Boosters throughout their kids’ careers.
Beyond “mom-hood” Dottie worked in various aspects of the floral industry, finally finding her home at Flower Fair with Palm. For years she would be who you called if you needed anything in the way of a floral arrangement or a gift basket.
Dot and Bob spent many happy vacations at Club Med in Mexico. Club Med was Dottie’s “happy place”. She loved anything to do with SUN. She did not miss the harsh winters of her growing-up years. She would have lived in her bikini had weather permitted.
As her kids moved into adulthood she came to thoroughly enjoy her new status as “Grandma Dot”. She loved nothing more than dragging a friend or grandkid along with her on her Club Med excursions.
In 2005 Dottie lost her life-partner, Bob. Her faith, family and friends grounded her as they always have and no one who did not know her very well would ever guess how difficult it was at times for her to appear the same upbeat, larger-than-life “Dottie”. Between evolving into “GG” as the “great-grands” started arriving, retirement, and the numerous indignities that growing older can inflict, to those of us privileged enough to have shared in her adventure she will remain forever the matriarch to top them all.
Dottie was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Eleanor and Caroline, and her beloved grandson Johnathan, among so many others we believe were all there to greet her upon arrival. She is survived by her brother John, sons Timothy (Emily), Patrick, Casey (Beth), Ben (Laura), and her daughter Katie. (Oh-and “bastard-son” Sam Spalding (Kathy).) Grandma Dot/GG will forever be a cherished part of the memories and lives of her grandchildren: Jeremy (Anna), Kasey (Cliff), Garrett (Joelie), Taylor, Benjamin (Destiny), and Colton, and that of her great grandchildren: Isla, Jamison, Dylan, Scout, Lennon, Reed, Suede, Dawson, and Coleson.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2024 at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church - 6350 N Fort Apache Road, Las Vegas, NV 89149. (For those interested, there will be a recitation of the rosary preceding the mass, at 1:30 p.m.)
