Elaine M. Porter Burris was born on September 22, 1929, in New Orleans Louisiana. She was the youngest of three children, born to Richard Porter and Bertha Taylor. Elaine was educated in the New Orleans, Louisiana school system. Elaine's was blessed to have been nurtured by her loving grandmother, Laura Taylor, and her Aunt Beulah Taylor Chisholm. After living in New Orleans for a while, Elaine's Uncle Louis Taylor opened his home up to them in Portland, Oregon. Finally, after a few years in Porland, Elaine and her grandmother made Oakland, California their home with her uncle and aunt, George, and Beulah Chisholm. Elaine eventually became a homeowner and planted her feet there, however, Las Vegas, Nevada is where she made her final earthly home until her death.
Elaine accepted Christ at an early age and upon moving to Oakland, California, she found a church home with St. Columbia’s Catholic Church where she was a member for over 30 years. Elaine was warm, loving, caring, compassionate, kind, gentle, affectionate, and she loved the Lord. Although Elaine did not birth any children with her late husband, Larry Burris, (Deceased in 1975) she was blessed to share what God had given her with her many friends and family. In her leisure, if she was not traveling, Elaine warmed the seats at Candlestick Park and the Levi Stadium to watch her favorite team, San Francisco 49ers where she was a season ticket holder for the past 30 years. Elaine enjoyed a wonderful career of 37 years as a Lab Technician for the Veteran’s Administration where she was a dedicated employee and was rewarded for her outstanding service with plaques, certificates, and other honors. Elaine retired from the VA Hospital, but her service continued at the Physical Fitness Facility for an additional 10 years.
Elaine received her wings on Saturday, November 4, 2023, when the Lord called her home to her eternal resting place. She will meet her heavenly loved ones who have gone on before; her late husband Larry Burris, her loving grandmother, Laura Taylor, sweet mother, Bertha Taylor, her kindhearted uncle and aunt, George and Beulah Chisholm, her beautiful sister, Doris, and her ever loving brother, Willie, and her cousin (sister) Vera Turner Beasley. She also leaves behind a host of family and friends.
If Elaine could be with you right now, she would say to her surviving loved ones, her stepdaughter, Lynette Burris, cousin Evelyn N. Thomas, cousin (grandson), Isaiah Green and special cousin (niece), Ursula Thomas, and very close friend (relative), Maxine Dartez and Carletta Fanfare.
She would say to all of you:
“I love you all but please don’t cry for me because I’m resting in the bosom of Jesus and remember, Never Put a Question Mark Where God Puts a Period.”
A funeral service for Elaine will be held Friday, December 1, 2023, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Palm Northwest Mortuary, 6701 North Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89131.
