Gladys was born on December 5, 1936, to JB and Vaireree Vernoy in Trenton, TX. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents.
Gladys married Carl Wells in 1955 in Hobbs, NM, and 3 daughters were born from that union, Wanda Stephens, Carol Wells and Veritta Wells. The couple later divorced. Gladys married Donald Mitchell in July of 1976 and moved to San Diego, CA.
Gladys worked as a telephone operator at the General Telephone Company (GTE) in Hobbs, NM. She co-owned a beauty salon, La Petite, with her sister-in-law, Johnny Patterson.
In San Diego, she continued her career in cosmetology for an additional 47 years. Gladys also retired from General Atomics (formerly Maxwell Labs).
Gladys was the oldest of 3 siblings: Jewel Nesbitt (deceased), and Eddie Dixon.
Gladys leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Kimberly Wells, her daughter Alix Santocono; Rahsheda Ness, her children Isabelle and Gavin Ness; Anthony Stephens Jr.; Omari Stephens, and his children Zara Stephens and Jacob Tate; Maya Stephens, and her children Kingston and Royal Stephens.
GG, as she was affectionately called, loved to travel, dance, listen to all genres of music, and go to church. Football season will never be the same, as we will always remember GG's love for the Dallas Cowboys. Above all else her children, nephews, family and friends (from coast-to-coast) meant the world to her and were the reason for her love and laughter.
When I close my eyes, I smile because I know that I'll see you again.
Some days are harder than others, and I've been living with this ache buried in my chest since you left, but how different would life be if I didn't have you to miss?
"Without you I can barely breathe, but knowing you is the reason I can." --Nelle Starling
