

Hazel L. Smith, 85, passed away Thursday, June 24, 2010. She was born March 17, 1925, in New England, N.D., and was a 33-year resident of Las Vegas. Hazel worked at the phone company and in the shipyards in Portland, Ore. She later worked in the finishing department at Gerber Knives, as well as being a homemaker. After purchasing the Husky Truckstop in 1977, she and her husband moved to Las Vegas. Together, and with their family, they successfully ran the truckstop which is still family-owned and operated as Morton's Flying J Travel Plaza. Hazel was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Morton D. Smith. She is survived by her children, Roger J. Smith, Myrna Angell, Mark Smith and Kristy Cotrell, and their spouses; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and sister, Ann Wood and her spouse, Bert, of Portland, Ore. A public viewing will be from 9:30 a.m.-noon Friday, July 2, with a service following, both at Palm Mortuary, 7400 W. Cheyenne Ave. Burial will follow at Bunkers Memory Gardens Cemetery, 7251 W. Lone Mountain Road, in Las Vegas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Hazel's name to Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada, 2941 Harris Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89101, or to the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, P.O. Box 27106, New York, NY 10087.
