To his friends and family, he was known as “Big Herbie”, “The Gentle Giant”, who had a heart of gold and an infectious smile. To his grandchildren he was “Papa”, to his daughters, wife, brother, uncle, father in-law, and brother in-law, he was known as their protector, their strength, and their super-hero.
Herbert L. Sequera passed away the morning of April 27th, 2023, with his family by his side. He turned in his superhero shield for his angel wings, and is now flying high, (just like a Flyin’ Elvi).
Herb, the oldest of three children to Herbert Sr. and Sarah Sequera, was born on November 1, 1955, in Bronx, New York, and grew up on Evergreen Ave.
After high school, Herb attended Wagner College on Staten Island, and met the love of his life, his soulmate, his wife of 45 years, Yvonne. After college, Herb decided to show his love for our country by enlisting in the United States Army and served over a decade in the United States Military. After his time in the Army, Herb took his talents and passion for science and health to the Southern Nevada Health District, as an Environmental Specialist for over twenty-five years.
Herb loved his family with all his heart. He was a proud father and loved his promotion to “Papa” to his five beautiful grandchildren. He was proud to be a Veteran and was equally as proud of his Puerto Rican heritage and his roots leading back to The Bronx.
When he wasn’t saving the Las Vegas community from food poisoning (that’s a little Health Inspector humor), he loved going fishing, spending time with his family and friends, listening to Salsa music (Wepa), traveling, and BBQing on the weekends. He loved to cook and was known for making the best pastelillos during the holidays.
He made everyone feel welcome and was known for his kindness. He had a rule for anyone invited to his and Yvonne’s home – “First time you’re a guest, after that, your family. Mi Casa Es Su Casa..” He loved everyone and made sure everyone felt loved and accepted for who they are, which is why he was known as The Gentle Giant.
Herb spent his final days surrounded by his family, listening to Salsa music, and being honored with a special Military Salute, and we know he wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Until we meet again, as Herb would say, “Remember to smile every day, when times get hard, make lemonade out of lemons, and let things roll off your back, like water off a ducks a**.”
Fill not your hearts with pain and sorrow, but remember me in every tomorrow. Remember the joy, the laughter, the smiles. I’ve only gone to rest for a while. Although my leaving causes pain and grief, my going has eased my hurt and given me relief. So dry your eyes and remember me, not as I am but as I used to be. Because, I will remember you all and look on with a smile. Understand in your hearts, I’ve only gone to rest a while. As long as I have the love of you, I can live my life in the hearts of all of you.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.palmnorthwest.com for the Sequera family.
