Ivan was born on May 15, 1935 in Detroit, MI to Sarah and Herman Sandler, the youngest of 3 boys. The Sandler family moved to Montebello, CA in 1947, where they owned and operated Sandler Shoes. Ivan graduated from Montebello High School in 1952. He attended Los Angeles City College, and graduated with a degree in Physics at UCLA in 1956.
Ivan and his first wife, Marian, raised 4 children in La Mirada, CA. The Sandler house was noisy and busy, filled with pets, friends, family, sports, music, academics and Jewish holiday celebrations. Ivan liked to tinker in the yard and the garage, spending his weekends fixing the household appliances and cars. He was an avid golfer, frequently joining the neighborhood dads and kids at The Big Tee Golf Course to hit a bucket of balls. He played bridge, read, and enjoyed several sports. He enthusiastically followed his favorite teams, the LA Dodgers, UCLA Bruins, and LA Rams. Ivan and Marian socialized with the other neighborhood parents, going to movies and plays, or playing cards.
Ivan spent his career as an engineer in the Aerospace industry in Southern California, working for several large companies, including TRW, Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Hughes Aircraft Co. In 1968 the family moved to Houston, TX where Ivan worked on Apollo 11 at TRW. The young family stayed up to watch the first human walk on the moon, because that was important to Ivan; something he told his children they would always remember, and would tell to their children and grandchildren. He retired as a Programs Manager at Hughes Aircraft in Fullerton in 1988.
In 1981, Marian and Ivan divorced. He reconnected with an acquaintance he knew from years earlier at Temple Beth Shalom in Whittier, Miriam Peyser. They eventually married in 1989, and enjoyed many active years together, traveling, running marathons, skiing, biking and golfing. They retired to Las Vegas, NV. They were married for 23 years, until Miriam’s death in 2012.
Ivan launched a second career as a tax preparer at Sandler Tax, and continued to stay active in retirement. He could never be found sitting still for very long. Until his death, he continued to pursue his love of investing and watching the stock market.
Ivan is predeceased by his parents, Herman and Sarah, his brothers Arthur and Bernard, and his second wife, Miriam. He is survived by 4 children, Bryan (Teri), Deborah (Ira), Jeff, and Tracy (Marc); 6 grandchildren, Amy (Thomas), Matt (Liana), Sarina (Martti), Bailey (Chris), Rachel (Ben), and Danielle; and 5 great grandchildren, Zeke, Gia, Isaac, Levi and Brady.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, March 23, 2023 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at Palm Northwest Cemetery, 6701 North Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89131
