Jackie Edward Spivey was the youngest of five siblings born to Malcolm and Myrtle Spivey on August 11, 1940 in Buffalo, New York. Growing up he began working at a young age as a paper boy. He gained a liking for boxing and was even featured in the local paper.
A natural musician, Jackie began writing and composing music, as well as singing and songwriting. Jackie was a part of multiple popular singing groups in Buffalo. Jackie played saxophone, flute, piano, and guitar. He co-wrote, “I Just Need More Money” with Anna Gordy Gaye for Motown, as well as recorded in Ray Charles’ studio. Jackie had his first born son, Jackie Jr at the age of 18, and daughter Dawn Monet shortly after with his first love and wife, Barbara.
After serving as a Vietnam Veteran, Jackie moved to Los Angeles to follow his dream and love for music. While there he met his second and final love, Sandra. The two married on September 12, 1980 and had four children; Song, Dance, Harmony, and Jazz. They bought their first house together known as “20th Street”, restored the Victorian house and made it a home for 15 years. Known for his immaculate dress, style, clean look, and wonderful colognes, Jackie was a true fashion icon and showstopper.
Jackie enjoyed shooting pool, playing his instruments, and exercising daily. Jackie was a father and family man who made time for walks at the beach with his wife and children, and liked to play basketball with his kids. Jackie took pride in his home. Every Saturday morning you could find him working in the yard, and boy was it pristine.
He earned his AA from Los Angeles Trade Tech while working full-time and retired from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department as a Lieutenant after over 32 years of service. Upon his retirement, the family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Jackie used to refer to himself as, “The Kid”, and would often say, “The kid ain’t never getting old”, and what power those words had! He never got a wrinkle and people were always in disbelief to hear that he was in his 80s. Jackie passed peacefully in his home on September 3, 2024 with his wife by his side.
Jackie now joins his mother and father, and sisters Oravae and Joan who left this physical realm before him. Jackie is survived by his wife, Sandra; six children, Jackie Jr., Dawn Monet, Song, Dance, Harmony, and Jazz; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his brother Malcolm; his sister Claudette (Sweetie); and other beloved extended family members too numerous to list.
Jackie was a true man of faith, honor, a man of integrity, strength, and honesty. He lead by example and was a man of his word. He instilled all of these characteristics, as well as discipline and the power of the mind into his children and those around him. He will be truly missed by family and friends.
