Jack was full of energy, wit, kindness, humor and had numerous hobbies. He was a natural leader and visionary who recognized the need for public service and made attempts to run for public office for the Nevada State Assembly and Nevada Board of Regents. He even managed to produce a movie called “Samaira” that has won several awards and is recognized for promoting cleanliness and women’s issues in India. His all-time favorite activity was spending time with his grandchildren and family.
Jack was born and raised in a small rural village in India and as a result of being an excellent student won a scholarship to attend medical school at BJ Medical School in Pune. After graduating from medical school he completed residencies in pediatrics in both the UK and the US. His first job was in Oklahoma City teaching and practicing pediatrics at the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Surpure moved to Las Vegas in the early 1990s where he served as the Director of Pediatric Emergency Services at University Medical Center.
He completed the last 30+ years of his career at the Urgent Care he founded, Children’s Urgent Care, where he took care of thousands of pediatric patients. Jack is one of the few physicians who was triple board certified (Pediatrics, Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Adult Emergency Medicine).
He was an enthusiastic teacher and authored several textbooks on Pediatric Emergency Medicine and received several national and international awards including the prestigious Martha Bushore-Fallis award from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Jack also helped found the Oklahoma Chapter of American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI).
Jack never forgot where he came from and worked tirelessly to advance pediatric emergency medical care in both the US and India. As a result of his efforts, he has been awarded the “Dr. JS Surpure Oration” from the National Assembly on Pediatric Emergency Medicine(NAPEM) which is given on an annual basis on behalf of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics.
