James (Jim) Berlin Carroll
June 1, 1940 – December 10, 2025
James “Jim” Berlin Carroll was born on June 1, 1940, to John Shearon Carroll and Ellen (Oldham) Carroll. He was raised in the old yellow board house on a ranch in Seneca, New Mexico, where he developed a lifelong love of people, storytelling, and hard work. As the oldest child, he was a proud big brother to his two sisters, Lynda Carroll and Sandra Ward (who married Dan Ward).
Jim attended Keyes High School in Keyes, Oklahoma, and graduated with the Class of 1958. After high school, he attended Panhandle State College in Oklahoma before transferring to Electronic Trade School in Amarillo, Texas.
In his early working years, Jim was employed by the old S&H Green Stamp Redemption Center. He later moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the 1960s, where he worked for Burroughs Corporation, then a leading manufacturer of mainframe computers.
In Albuquerque, Jim met “the most beautiful girl in Albuquerque,” Edwina Hills. They were married in June 1962, and she was truly the love of his life. Their marriage was a partnership built on faith, laughter, and deep devotion.
In October 1962, Jim was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam era. He faithfully served his country and, after his service, was honorably discharged. Jim and Edwina then settled in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they began raising their family.
Together, Jim and Edwina had four children:
Kim and her husband, Mike Hughes
Chandra and her husband, Michael Block
Jay (Brandt)
Lang (Galen) and his wife, Amy Carroll
In 1979, the family moved to Fountain Valley, California. In 1995, Jim and Edwina left California and made their home in Las Vegas, Nevada, where they lived until his passing on December 10, 2025.
Jim later spent much of his career as a salesman in the heavy equipment industry, selling pavers and heavy mining equipment. He was known for his ability to connect with anyone, his sense of humor, and his natural talent for storytelling. He truly had a story for every situation and loved being around people.
After moving to Las Vegas, Jim discovered and nurtured his artistic side. He taught himself to paint and created pictures that reflected his creativity and unique perspective. He never lost his flair for telling a good story or expressing himself through art.
Jim also had a lifelong passion for classic cars. He always had a project car waiting in the wings, just the right one for “someday,” when the time was perfect to finish it.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Edwina; his four children; and his six grandchildren: Justin Hughes, Kaitlyn Finke and her husband Forest Finke, Gavin Hughes, Sarah Hughes, Deana Diaz and her husband Jacob Diaz, and Crystal Block and Brian White. He is also lovingly survived by his 16 great grandchildren.
He is additionally survived by his nieces and nephews: Sean and his wife Natalie Ward, Kendra Ward, Wayne and his wife Julie Williams, Kerry Williams-Jackman and her husband Mike, and Joleen Baughman.
Throughout his life, Jim followed and loved Christ. His faith guided him, and his relationship with God was an important foundation for how he lived and loved.
Jim’s laughter, advice, stories, creativity, and love will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on January 17, 2026, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
