We celebrate the life of James McGee, born February 9, 1931, in Wisner, Louisiana, to the late Oliver and Thelma McGee. Oliver preceded Thelma in death, and Thelma later met and married Rev. Andrew Dudley, who lovingly raised James and his siblings as his own.
James was raised in a Christian home alongside his three siblings, Emma Anderson, Dorothy Thues, and Clifton McGee, all of whom preceded him in death.
He was educated at Richland Parish Training School in Delhi, Louisiana. In 1951, James joined the U.S. Marine Corps, proudly serving his country until receiving an honorable discharge in 1953. After his military service, he returned to Delhi, where he worked at the Western Auto Store before joining Sun Oil Company, where he made history as the first Black plant operator.
In 1956, James married Berdie Mae McGee. To this union, one child was born, Oliver Wayne McGee. Both Berdie Mae and Oliver Wayne preceded him in death.
James was baptized by Rev. Jessie Drummer and became a member of Cloud Creek Baptist Church, now under the leadership of Pastor Gerald Smith, who served as his pastor until his passing. James was a faithful and dedicated member, contributing greatly to the church’s financial ministry.
As his health declined, James relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada, to be near family and receive care.
He leaves to cherish his memory a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his beloved church family.
