

MSgt, USAF, Retired James “Smitty” D. Smith passed away on Jul 1, 2021 in Las Vegas, NV. To all the poker dealers and players out there, Smitty went ‘all in’. He was born on Jan 1, 1932 in Nashville, TN to John L. and Irma L. Smith. He lived in Nashville until he joined the Air Force at the age of 19 years old. After basic training, he was assigned to Topeka, KS where he met and was married to the love of his life, Shirley J (Winkler) Smith on June 6, 1954.
James and Shirley were able to travel together on all assignments while in the Air Force including tours to Japan, Germany, Ethiopia (Eritrea) and Iran plus many within the USA. They raised two daughters and showed them the world. He retired to Las Vegas, NV in Jun 1977 and lived there since.
He became a poker dealer in 1977 and worked in 3 casinos (Mint, Imperial Palace and Texas Station) over 18 years. Smitty was a loving husband and caring father. He loved to deal and play poker, dance, and travel. He was a past president of the Las Vegas Stars Baseball Club and Booster Club. He was a big fan of Stock Car Racing, Las Vegas Thunder hockey and Las Vegas Wranglers hockey clubs and a recent fan of the Vegas Golden Knights too. He loved to RV with the Vegas High Rollers.
He is survived by daughter and son in law Wanda and Steve Glock of Redondo Beach, CA; son in law Barry Greer of San Antonio. Preceded in death by his wife of 66+ years, Shirley J. Smith; daughter Colleen Greer; and 4 brothers. John L who lived in Wash D.C. and Nathan H, E. Nelson and Orville V. who all lived in Tennessee.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association. Services will be private.
