John is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Peggy; his children, Wendy, Bonnie (Joey), Ann, and Johnathon; and his cherished grandchildren, Parker, Sadie, Frankie, Grant, and Owen. He is also survived by his siblings, Steve, Alice (Norm), and Jeff and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Patricia Dunn; his Uncle Al; and his brother, Bob.
John was born on March 23, 1953, in Southern California, and in his early adulthood set out to see the country. Alongside his Uncle Mike, he traveled across the United States in an old 1957 Chevy police car, sleeping in the car, and taking odd jobs ranging from pulling weeds to working for the circus whenever money ran low. He often told stories from that time, and it was clear it shaped him deeply. He learned resilience, how to make life work with what you have, and embraced a deep seated belief that a person doesn’t need much to live a good and happy life.
In 1975, John proudly entered the United States Air Force, serving until 1979, an experience that shaped his strong work ethic, sense of duty, and love of country. It was during this time that he found his faith and became a devoted man of God. After his service, John built a life centered on God, family, hard work, and the simple joys that brought him the most happiness.
John carried a deep love for life and for the people around him. He approached each day with warmth, humor, and a genuine curiosity that made everyone feel welcome in his presence. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and few things brought him greater joy than time spent with his family. He especially treasured moments with his grandchildren, sharing stories, laughter, and his unmistakable sense of wonder.
John was actively involved in Scouting for over 20 years, giving his time and heart to mentoring young people and helping them grow into confident, capable individuals. During this time, he served as a leader in both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. His commitment to service and community left a lasting impression on countless lives.
One of John’s greatest loves was Christmas. He embraced the season with childlike excitement and loved the many traditions the season held. The music, the lights, the gatherings, and the simple joy of being together. His enthusiasm for the holiday became a gift he passed on to his family, and Christmas will forever carry his spirit with it.
John lived fully, loved deeply, and made the world brighter for having been in it.
