A quiet, gentle, unassuming man with a wicked sense of humor, Leonard Schweitzer would never be considered ordinary. So much so that he left us with his signature wink and gained his angel wings on Thursday, February 29, 2024, after contracting the Covid virus November 30, 2023. He fought valiantly until the very end, but complications made it impossible to recover.
Leonard Schweitzer was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on April 3, 1935. He spent his youth in Waupaca, Wisconsin. He served during the Korean War in the United States Air Force as a Senior Airman. Over the course of his life, he worked for United Airlines; he retired from IBM, then took on post-retirement positions with both Bunker and La Paloma Mortuaries. He was an active member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church performing the duties of eucharistic minister, lector, and choir director. He was the elected secretary of AUSA for many years. One of his greatest achievements was being awarded The Angels of Adoption congressional award in 2006, along with his wife of 47 years, Emma Schweitzer (deceased) after providing foster care to over 200 infants for Catholic Charities in Las Vegas.
Len was a loving father, not only to his daughters Maria Schweitzer and Rebecca (Bryn) Wilks, but to many of his daughters' friends. He was honored to be a god-father to both Julie Thompson and Adele Csensick. He was a doting grandfather to Arica, Galen, Sean and Eric. Len was the type of person who never knew a stranger. He made time for relationships and socializing with his many friends and family alike.
Len is survived by his brothers Russ (Alda) Schweitzer and Skip (Susan) Schweitzer. His sister and brother-in-law Roberta Mitchell (Chuck) both preceded him in death.
