Lewis Leroy Terry (82) a long-time resident of Las Vegas, NV, passed away on May 28th after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on August 1, 1939 in Maywood, CA to Lewis Frank and Merle Kathryn Terry. His family moved a great deal while growing up including California, Arizona, Utah, and Alaska, before settling down in Las Vegas, which was only supposed to be for a short time, but they made it their home.
After graduating from Las Vegas High School in 1957 he attended BYU for one year and decided to join the Army. He proudly served from 1961 to 1963 and then became a reservist. He later worked as a painter at the Nevada Test Site.
In 1967 he married the love of his life, Cynthia Shaw. A year later they were blessed with their only child, Karena. Married for over 50 years they set an example of a loving relationship…time tested…storms weathered…dedication till the end.
Lew worked for the Clark County Sheriff’s Department and later joined the CCSD Police Department where he worked for nearly 30 years as a campus officer. He was assigned to Vo-Tech High School in the 1970’s and later at Rancho High School; along with many other duties.
He had quite the passion for cars. He loved drag racing, working on and painting race cars, and trying to find the perfect VW bug. He was an avid collector of guns and sunglasses, and lately had been on the lookout for the perfect Corvette.
Lew’s reputation for being a tough guy and sometimes challenging is morphed by his gentle, caring, and genuine spirit. He was a dedicated husband, father, and provider; a fiercely loyal and protective man. Lew was extremely proud to be “Grandpa” to Landon and Kendall, whom he adored.
His last wish was to live out his remaining days at home, and passed away peacefully with his daughter by his side. Preceded in death by his parents, wife, Cynthia Shaw Terry, and several loyal canine companions.
He is survived by his daughter, Karena Larson (Tim), two grandchildren, Landon and Kendall, his brother Ronald Terry (Ann) of Provo, Utah, and several nieces and a nephew.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 18th at Palm Mortuary, 7400 W. Cheyenne Ave, Las Vegas, NV, 89129. A reception will follow the service at the Larson Family home.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.palmcheyenne.com for the Terry family.
