Dear Marie,

My remembrance of your graciousness, warmth, and kindness registered deeply from a very early age; you consistently radiated positivity, and always infused every family get-together with your lightness and sense of humor. Your home was always so lovely and welcoming, and you generously gave us many wonderful childhood memories… later, as an adult, my favorite ones being of you and Jack dancing together; truly one of the greatest joys ever to behold! I still smile when I think of how cute and well put-together you always were, and how your voice and laughter resonated like a delightful bell. 

I am so very grateful for your having been our “bonus” Grandmother. Thank you so much for enriching all of our lives with your beautiful and vivacious spirit.

I have many very fond memories of Marie. She was always energetic and full of love, a wonderful hostess, and kind to everyone.

Just learned of your passing. Sorry we were unable to see each other in our last few years.  I have many happy memories of visiting with you and the family in Malibu.

Marie was a terrific stepmother and step-grandmother during the several decades when she lived with my father in their Malibu home and Rudy and I and our three young children lived nearby, in Santa Monica.  We spent many Saturdays at  their beach home, enjoying exploring the tidepools and then those evening barbecues out on the deck. She was always helpful, generous, patient, and good-humored. Of course she had kids of her own. Beginning with her birth family's experience when confined in Manzanar in WWII, she was basically well acquainted with different complexities, problems, and sorrows in human lives and relationships. I was very happy for her sake that after my dad's passing she moved on to another long-lived marriage--to Jack.  And though it took her away from California, she maintained contact with us Kambs over the years. In past years we were pleased to see her on few visits. Her unique spirit lives on and thrives in our memories.

Dear Grandmother,

Even though I haven’t seen you in a while, I just want you to know that I love you. Always loved you. You lived a long and amazing life. I hope you’re at peace now. No aches, pains, or sickness.

Dear Marie:

I will remember you for always inspiring a smile and laughter —  even when you hilariously “heckled” me from the sideline while Susie and I were just knocking a tennis ball around many years ago. Susie and I still laugh about it and still love you for it.  You were honest, friendly and fun to be around. More importantly, you were there to help when we needed it. Your daughter and I love you forever.

I liked you the moment I met you. I think we both recognized our kindred spirits. And I have your wonderful, loving daughter, Susie, as a friend and kindred spirit.
