Martha Jane Thurston

Martha Jane Thurston “Marty”, 85 originally from Stanwood, Iowa passed away March 27th in her home in Las Vegas with family. Martha (Cain) was born August 31st 1939 in Stanwood Iowa where she grew up up on the Hegarty farm. Following High School she worked in Cedar Rapids as a Cosmetologist and moved to Las Vegas in 1967.

She married Sherman Thurston in December 1970 in Las Vegas. She received her BSN in Nursing from UNLV in 1975 and spent 30 years in nursing as a Labor and delivery, Psych and ER specialist. She retired in 2005 and then loved to volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol reaching the rank of Major as a flying communications specialist. She enjoyed reminiscing of her farm life and in later years she always was engaged in learning new things. Of course sharing her thoughts with her Sunday morning breakfast bunch.

She will be remembered for many things: love of pizza, quilting club, sewing prowess and painting. She would take pictures from her travels and make beautiful painting reproductions.

She was proceeded in death by her husband Sherman, her parents John Cain and Edith Hegarty, sister Elizabeth Engen.

Survivors include sister Patsy of Iowa City, cousin Sharon Fall of Stanwood, Nieces Georgann, Crystal and Susan, nephews Mark, Aaron and Travis. And second cousin Frank.
