Born on October 20, 1930, in California to Manuel and Florence Diaz, Mary was raised with strong family values and a deep commitment to her Catholic faith—principles that would guide her entire life. She was a member of St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church in North Las Vegas, where her charitable heart, unwavering belief, and generous spirit were evident in everything she did.
Feisty and full of love, Mary was known for her strong will and even stronger heart. She never hesitated to speak her mind or share her perspective—but always with kindness and purpose. Her love for family, friends, and faith was constant and unconditional.
Mary dedicated her professional life to teaching, serving as an elementary school teacher for grades 3 through 6 at Our Lady of Guadalupe School - Los Angeles. Passionate about all subjects, she especially valued teaching Theology. She played a vital role in preparing her students for their First Holy Communion—often providing clothing or other necessities to ensure no child was left out. Her legacy as a teacher lives on in the lives she touched with her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering dedication.
Mary's home was always immaculate and beautifully decorated—especially during the holidays, with Christmas and her treasured nativity scene being her favorite. She had an impeccable sense of style, always dressed to the nines, and never failed to compliment others on their appearance with genuine appreciation.
She loved the open road and had a special fondness for nature, national parks, and camping adventures. An avid lover of game shows like Wheel of Fortune and Family Feud, she also enjoyed reading John Grisham novels and relaxing with her beloved pets—including her cherished Chihuahuas Pepe, Willie, Chucho, and Peanut the Dachshund.
Mary was generous not only with her time and attention, but with her heart. She regularly supported her church and various religious organizations and was deeply respected for her compassion, integrity, and grace.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Nicolas Hernandez; her sisters Irene, Gloria, and Linda. She is survived by her brother Manuel, sister Delia, and numerous nieces, nephews, and God-children—each of whom carry a piece of her legacy forward.
