

Mary Evelyn Mackie was born on June 14, 1942, to the late Albert Earl and Helen Waters in Calypso, North Carolina. At an early age her family moved to Alexandria, Virginia, where she attended elementary school. At age 10, her family relocated to Brooklyn, New York. She completed her education in the New York School System. Mary attended St. Luke’s Baptist Church in Queens, New York. On January 13, 1960, Mary married Thomas Eugene Mackie and from this union two children, Tonia Denise and Donnell Eugene Mackie were born. Mary began her career at Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in February 1967, where she retired in June 1997, as an Occupational Therapist. During her lengthy career, she received numerous awards in recognition for her dedicated service. Mary fulfilled her dream…she left New York in 2004, purchased a beautiful new home and car, and began a new life in Las Vegas. Mary loved to travel and she vacationed throughout the Caribbean and Mexico. She was a talented crafts person, creating many unique artifacts. She also enjoyed landscaping and gardening and home interior design. Mary was a warm and welcoming hostess. Her home was always open and available to anyone seeking a place to stay. Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Wilbert Earl Waters. She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Tonia Denise Mackie; son, Donnell Eugene Mackie (Carllene); two grandsons, Brandon and Justin Mackie; two granddaughters, Rahikya Wilson and Sherelle Orr; her adopted brother, Robert Steele; two first cousins, Sarah Hipps and Doris Haynes; many second cousins, three sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
