In 2008, I met Neil for an interview for a bartending job.  I had been friends with his brother JR, and it was this brother who brought me in to meet with Neil.  I didn’t wait long before I heard that I was hired, and this job at Qube Ultralounge started a fun and lucrative era in my life – nightclub bartending for the next 10 or so years.

Neil was a very easy-going but still effective manager.  He patiently taught me how to handle fast-pace and high volume.  He must have believed in my abilities because he quickly put me in the prime spot at the bar so I would be the first bartender guests would see as they walked into the door.  Neil was fun and interactive; he didn’t manage his bartenders from another room where he watched us on camera from a screen.  He was behind the bar in the trenches alongside with us.  He was not above or afraid of doing heavy lifting or barbacking if necessary. He enjoyed the music and would show it by shaking a martini to the beat of a song, or singing along with the lyrics.  Occasionally, at the beginning of the night before we had any guests or when we weren’t busy, he would hop out from behind the bar and into the DJ booth where he would play and mix a few songs for the staff (...and he was pretty smooth!).  He could be a little playful and mischievous, too.  Sometimes when JR was DJing, Neil would have me tease him for his selections or transitions.  “Go up to the booth and ask JR if he heard a train wreck.”  When it came to discipline, he may have had to scold me once or twice, but was very reasonable about it; he never really yelled unless he was competing with the loud volume of the music and talking with customers.  And at the end of the day, he helped make my job fun and I was excited to go to work, which are qualities of an effective boss.  

I hope his kids know that Neil could throw and manage a party.  And when their times come to celebrate, he will be with you ensuring that you have a great time... and know he's there.


To the children and wife of Neil, 

I never met any of you, but I’ve had conversations with Neil about all of you. Between my early mornings and his multiple shifts; you ALL were his motivation to keep pushing through the day.  I started nursing school in May of 2020, while I worked as a HD Tech and preceptor at Davita Acutes, and the advice given to me from Neil; was actually the experiences he witness through his wife, Rica.  Neil would ramble on and on about how proud he was that his wife had gone to nursing school, that he could see the sparkle in her eye as she got closer to the finish line. His kids, he wanted nothing but happiness and success. He was So proud of them. Their art was his constant reminder at work. He would tape them to his tool box. Every morning, we’d look at the drawings. Smile and go on with our day. I will always remember the talks we had, advice that was given, and the constant push to be a better human being. I loved when football season came. We would always go back and forth about players and how i thought my players were awesome and he would just laugh at me. He was such an awesome person and a great friend. I will miss him dearly.
