Norman Romney was by every definition a desert rat. This may be due to the fact that he was born and raised at the foot of Camelback mountain in Phoenix Arizona. Or maybe it's because he loved the sun and abhored the snow - afterall, you don't have to shovel sunshine. His favorite sport to play was golf, which can not be played in the snow. Finally, his alma matter was Arizona State University where he proudly claimed his status as a Sun Devil - whose football team he passionately followed.
Norman was a man of faith, family, and fun. His faith was the foundation of his life and the formation of his character. In 1969 he chose to dedicate two years of full-time service, away from family and friends to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he spent his time proselyting and serving others. He spent those two years in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland. Shortly thereafter, in 1973 he married his sweetheart Marie Brown in an LDS temple in Ogden Utah. Because of his faith, he knew that he would be with his wife, four married children, and 15 grandkids throughout eternity - which faith has sustained us all through this shocking, trying time.
If you spent more than 5 minutes with Norm you would know that he had a very fun sense of humor - despite his lame jokes which none the less were funny. He loved making knicknames for his grandkids like, Joseph Reed Nelson the 'thoittty-thoid', Becca-da-boops, B-B-bagatch, Dilly-Dally, Mixer-moo, Super-Jewels or Soups, and Kent-twin. He loved playing card and bored games with family and friends and will be infamous for his smack-talking skills while playing which he perfected though the years. He loved gloating about winning and yet would quickly get "too tired" to play when he started losing. Whenever his grandkids would beat him he would say, "after all I do for you...and you beat me in this game!"
Norm has touched the lives of all those who knew him and will be sorely missed. The words of the Lord ring true in the life and death of Norm Romney, "precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints" (Psalms 116:15). The words of a poem, "Each Life that Touches Ours for Good," really encapsulate the life and legacy of N0rm Romney.
"Each life that touches ours for good
Reflects thine own great mercy, Lord
Thou sendest blessings from above
Thru words and deeds of those who love.
What greater gift dost thou bestow,
What greater goodness can we know
Than Christ-like friends whose gentle ways
Strengthen our faith, enrich our days.
When such a friend from us departs,
We hold forever in our hearts
A sweet and hollowed memory,
Bringing us nearer, Lord, to thee.
For worthy friends whose lives proclaim,
Devotion to the Savior's name,
Who bless our days with peace and love,
We praise thy goddness, Lord, above."
We love you dad! We miss you! Thank you for EVERYTHING.
