Sam was always the life of the party. At family gatherings the lull would always be raised when he arrived. He could hold court for an entire Thanksgiving and never tell the same story twice (for decades). His opinions were always his own but never at the expense others'. He had the talent of "agreeing to disagree" while doing neither and both at the same time. Our family spent much time at his cabin in Strawberry, AZ where nature, solitude and familial company could be enjoyed in equal measure. Many years after the property was sold I drove through with a colleague to point out where I spent my summers playing pine cone baseball, having misadventures in nature and pondering the Milky Way above. When I lived and worked down the highway from his new home in Chino Valley, AZ we had a common connection through a co-worker who announced play-by-play for the local high school sports teams. Sam listened to him on the radio. I told my co-worker he had a fan. I always wished I had gotten them together for a beer. As a very young person when I became aware of the difference between our Uncle Sam and "Uncle Sam" the great American symbol, it was one of the great revelations of my life. Of the two, my Uncle Sam is the epitome of the American Dream.

When I last visited Sam, as I was about to leave, he said "Well, tell everyone I said Hi". So I am saying, "HI" to Mercer County (Aledo), Rock Island County(Rock Island, Moline) Maricopa County (Phoenix) Yavapai County (Prescott, Chino Valley) Clark County (Las Vegas) He knew you all.

I always looked forward to seeing Uncle Sam.  When my brother and I were little, his greeting to us was always "hello girls."  He was fun to be around.

Sam, you will be missed by all of us who were in the Klaverman bunch. Your great smile and ability to tell a great joke will be with us all. Rest easy our friend

Well, Old Buddy, you are now with many of your Green Dragon teammates---Bud, Moose, Little Crash and others along with coach Pratt and Bob Jahn. The rest of us will soon be with you so don't run too many plays without us.  Until then life will be much emptier without the most popular guy among us all. I didn't know you well Sam, but met once and talked on the phone many times. You were such a sweet man. You will be missed. Barb Strong Chino valley AZ.

Sam, when we moved across the country, we miss you two. And enjoyed teasing you about Maid Rites.  You will be in our memories.

I will miss you Sam, you have been a good friend for so many years. Not to mention also a wonderful Father to our children. May you have eternal peace. I will think of you each time I watch a Cubs or Bears game, you seemed to be a fan of both those teams, Oh Yeah!!

Sam was more like a big brother than an uncle to me.  I'll miss him and our monthly telephone calls.  Most know that he was a big ASU sun devil fan and really disliked the U of A.  When our older son decided to go to U of A, I knew that I'd have to tell him.  Called and in a very shaky voice told him.  There was a long pause then he said "By God, he'll be the only good thing about that university."  One time my mom stopped to see him at his apartment and she noticed there was coffee on the ceiling.  Sam said that he had been watching the Suns game sitting in a chair.  He got so excited that he jumped up with his coffee cup in hand.  The coffee ended up on the ceiling but the Suns won.  No one like my Uncle Sam and, my, I'll miss him.  Sandi

Godspeed Uncle Sam, you were always great to us girls. Say hello to all who have gone before you and know on earth you are loved very deeply. Watch over your beautiful girls and hug their hearts on difficult days. You left big shoes to follow. I pray we all see you on the other side when those days are upon us. You will be missed deeply. God Bless you Kelley and Karen, you have gone above and beyond to be the best daughters anyone could ever be. God love you!
