On the morning of December 6, 1939, Fa'atalau'ula Si’u Leiataua Pili, lovingly known as Ula, was born to Si’u Sasa Leiataua and Tuliliau Agavale Sitagata in the village of Lepea, Samoa, as the ninth of thirteen children. Ula took her last and final breath on February 2, 2025, at 6:23 AM in her Las Vegas home, surrounded by her five children, grandchildren, and many loved ones.
Ula was preceded in death by her loving parents, Si’u and Tuliliau Leiataua, and several siblings with whom she shared a very close bond from childhood through adulthood. Her siblings in order of birth are:
Moemoemamaeolealasi Si’u * Ioane Leiataua Leuluaialii Si’u * Tulililau Si’u * Katuni Si’u * Faimafili Si’u * Faimasasa Si’u * Lonise Leilua * Palefuiono Si’u * (Ula) * Nele Si’u * Kuinise Si’u * Lisona Si’u * Uatime Si’u (living)
Ula moved to Laie, Hawaii, where she attended and graduated from Kahuku High School in 1963. She fondly recalls her time at Kahuku High School, and when she ran into other alumni she would proudly greet them “Red Raiders for Life” In 1966, Ula met her eternal companion, Billy, and they were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple on March 25, 1967. They settled in the Southern California areas, where she gave birth to all of her children.
In 1979, their journey led them to Samoa and then to American Samoa due to Billy's employment with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where they raised their children for several years before relocating to Las Vegas in 1997.
It has been over 25 years since Ula was parted from her eternal companion, Billy Atoa Matina Pili. We are comforted knowing she is now joyously reunited with her sweetheart along with many loved ones who went before her.
That celebration brings a smile to our faces, knowing how their gatherings are filled with laughter that would light up any room, and now, that laughter and joy are filling Heaven, which, if any, has been around them, those laughter and cheerful associations are contagious.
Ula's 85 years of life had a profound impact on countless individuals that she touched and influenced. A devoted mother, her life revolved around two core elements: her deep faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and her family, which were not merely principles but the very essence of her being. This was evident in her steadfast dedication to the Plan of Salvation.
Throughout her life, Ula served diligently in various Church callings, from Ward and Stake Young Women President to teaching alongside her husband in early morning seminary for over 20 years, influencing many young lives. She was among the first performers at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii, where her love for dancing was showcased. She was a member of several traveling groups around the Pacific and the U.S. showcasing Polynesian song and dance. Her soprano voice was distinctly notable in every group she joined. Her passion for cooking was another avenue of service, particularly for her family, a love that has become a cherished part of her daughters' lives. Ula's detail-oriented and organized nature, traits her children also inherited, made her an exceptional caregiver, homemaker, and leader.
Since 2004, after the passing of several siblings, she has made it a tradition to call numerous family members on major holidays, spreading love, happiness, and wishes for prosperity. Many of us have likely received one of these heartfelt calls, which we will deeply miss.
Ula is survived by her last sibling, Uatime Leiataua, and her five children: Valerie Pili * Wayland Pili (Becky) * Myrna Pili-Falo (Pati Kulesa) * Rozina Pili * Lynna Eskeets (Eldrick)
Ula’s influence extended to her grandchildren, who have all been positively touched by her love, teachings, and her many Christlike examples. Her grandchildren, along with their spouses, are: Trajan Pili (Emma) * Sinaiya Peck (Peter) * Kiralyn Laulu-Pututau (Moroni) * Aleena Heng (Mike) * Kennan Pili (Lindsay) * Mahonri Falo * Jade Pili * Atoa Eskeets (Shelbi) * Logan Pili (Ofa) * Celine Pili * Kailia Falo * Teankum Falo
Ula's legacy also includes numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, both on the Pili and Leiatua sides. Their lives were enriched and influenced for the better, many of whom view her adoringly and lovingly as a mother figure and matriarch, especially in the absence of their own mothers. Ula embodied the true essence of a loving and nurturing mother to everyone.
Ula will be deeply missed, and her life will forever be a testament to love, faith, and family. Her presence will continue to inspire and guide all who knew her.
We express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all of you for your expression of love in words and deeds, and for providing your means, it is very much appreciated. Fa’afetai tele lava…
