Mrs. Theresa Annie Lomotey, affectionately known as "Aunty Annie" was born on April 7th, 1928 in Accra, Ghana to C.B. Janney and Victoria Diehl. She attended Bishop Girl's Primary School before moving on to one of the premier secondary institutions, St. Monica's in Mampong, in the Ashanti region of Ghana. As a young lady she taught in primary institutions in Accra. She also worked at the Post and Telecommunications Service in Accra as a telegraphic specialist. This was the introduction to our modern day "WhatsApp". Her impeccable handwriting is an attestation of her specialty in her craft. She had two sons with Mr. Klusey a prominent pharmacist at the time. Subsequently she met and married Mr. J.B. Lomotey of blessed memory and together they raised nine children.
Mom and dad traveled extensively throughout the world in dad's capacity as a diplomat. This took them to several countries including India, Germany, U.K., Italy and Yugoslavia, to name a few.
Our parents eventually settled down in North Labone, Accra where mom established Joanne's Bakery (a play on both their names-Joe and Anne). Her patrons included major stores such as Multistores (CFAO), Glamour, Kingsway, foreign embassy staff, including the U.S. Embassy and a host of other individuals.
With the passing of her husband in February 1986, and the migration of most of her kids abroad, mom closed shop and assumed the role of Grandma Annie. She initially lived with her children in London and in the East Coast and eventually settled in Las Vegas where she lived until her passing on May 9th, 2019. In truth, she came to ensure that we were eating well and doing the right thing. Her culinary and baking skills were second to none. We will forever miss her lasagna, light soup, jollof and her famous rock buns. Mummy's passions included baking and watching her favorite chefs, Emeril Lagasse and Bobby Flay. She also enjoyed horse racing, game shows, playing the slot machines and she never hesitated to share any winnings with her children or anyone else who was in need. She also followed politics and world affairs keenly. She loved tending to her gardens especially her roses.
Mummy meant the world to all of us! Family and friends both at home and abroad would constantly reach out to her for advice on various issues and she never hesitated to make herself available to assist. She gave us invaluable advice regarding life issues, culinary advice, her grandchildren and most importantly the need to pray and stay close to God. Theresa, Auntie Annie, Mummy was quiet, yet determined, shy, yet spoke her mind, was sweet yet firm (as her grandkids would attest to). She had a soft smile and a infectious laugh yet could be stubborn and feisty, especially if she wanted to get out of any therapy sessions as her patient and loving caregivers soon found out. She possessed an inner strength that gave us such comfort, and this is why we have been left bereft at her passing. She was there in one form or another for each and every one of us. In the early hours of May 9th, 2019, Mummy left us to be with her creator and to be reunited with all her departed loved ones. Much as it is a blow to us, our faith reassures us that she is in a better place and at peace with the Lord. We are humbled by the outpouring of love and support and how much she meant to so many and how many lives she touched. Mummy, we will strive to carry on the legacy of love, unity and kindness to make you proud. You fought a good fight; your race is done.
Rest in Perfect Peace, Mummy!
