He was fearless and loved to try new things. We took him golfing for the first time just after his 80th birthday. Well into his 70’s he went sledding with us down Mt. Charleston. He believed in keeping his mind sharp and was learning Spanish, French, Italian and even Ancient Greek.
He was in a Duolingo battle for first place in his division with someone he swore “plays the game 24/7”. He was so addicted to Duolingo that while in the hospital last year recovering from heart surgery, he called Maria to log in and maintain his streak. Dad had 131088 XPs on Duolingo. That’s really a lot!
He was never afraid of new technology and used computers, cell phones and other devices as well as someone half his age.
He loved his Big Fish Mystery search and find games which gave him hours of enjoyment. When his grandchildren visited, they would help him with the puzzles and finding the hidden objects.
He was devoted to his organizations taking on roles that no one else dared to volunteer for and did an amazing job at them. He loved all the parties the organizations held. He loved to dance and rocked a kilt like no one else.
Although legally blind in one eye, he loved to practice shooting and was always willing to teach anyone who wanted to learn.
He prided himself on making the perfect breakfast and even texted pictures of his amazing omelets to his children.
He loved to fish after moving to Vegas but alas, never caught anything so he called it “casting practice”. He did however catch tons of fish on the Wii gaming system he played with his daughters.
His daughter, Grace, always hounded him about taking his pills so he would shout out in the morning and night, “I’m taking my pills” and Grace would shout back “Good job Daddy”. Living in a house with his daughters he loved his male bonding movie nights with his son-in-law Mike.
Dad was a movie buff and had some favorites: Pretty Woman, Cyrano de Bergerac, The Bells of St. Mary, Going My Way, The Gods Must Be Crazy, Love Potion #9, Lethal Weapon (the entire series), Star Wars (ditto), Doom, Crocodile Dundee, Horatio Hornblower, Down Periscope and The Hunt for Red October come to mind as ones he watched frequently.
He always remembered everyone’s birthday and other important events with Jackie Lawson cards. He was probably one of the earliest subscribers and has been sending them for years.
Daddy had the most wonderful laugh. Even if you were in a bad mood or sad, once daddy started laughing you couldn't help but join in.
He taught his son, Tom, how to be a true gentleman through his actions, words and example. Tom will miss him dearly until we are all reunited on judgement day. His daughter-in-law, Barbara, expressed that he was an amazing father-in-law and she could ask for no one better. He was an amazing person.
He was devoted to his wife, Grace, even years after her passing and was the most amazing, loving, giving and caring Dad to his children and grandchildren
