Something made me look up Vito on the Internet this evening, and I have just learned of his passing. I am heartbroken, as his friendship was a big part of my youth.

I grew up in Sherman Oaks, and was a steady customer at The Boys from Sicily from its opening until I moved to Seattle in 1992. Vito was such a dear friend — he knew me since before I got my driver’s license — and we would always have great chats when I’d stop by to eat or pick up an order to go. I was always greeted by a hearty “Mr. Stern!” and a big smile whenever I came in. He was always inquiring about my career — I’m a musician — and was invariably kind and supportive when he found out about my latest concerts and other activities. In particular, I will always remember how tender and warm he was when I stopped in in 1998 and 2004, having come down from Seattle when my father and mother, respectively, died; he had known them as well and understood how close our family was and what fine people they were. I adored Vito, and hearing of his passing is a great blow.

Vito was a great man and person. He loved his family, and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Our fondest memories are having dinner with Tana and Vito at their home. He taught me how to make chicken scallapini. Mine will never be as delicious as Vito's!! We also miss him out in his yard tending to his plants the true Italian way! Our neighborhood will never be the same. We miss you terribly Vito!!! The only consolation is your not suffering! Love, Joanne and Ray Cummings

We were sorry to learn of Vito's passing. He was the first person we met upon moving into our home 3 years ago. He was always talking with someone.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family.

Vito was a great man and loved his family above all. He will be missed by all who knew him. Our prayers to Tana, Tony and Vito Jr.

We were truly saddened to learn that Vito had passed away. We met him in early 2011. And although we didn't know him well, he ALWAYS was warm and welcoming to us. He will never be forgotten by us. We extend our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to his wife as well as all additional family members and friends.
