Two years departed but not a second forgotten. Always in our hearts, often on our minds. Again, a good friend is forever.

Difficult to believe my beloved friend and brother in arms is gone one year.  His passing truly left an unfillable void in my heart and so many others.  A candle will burn in our home tonight encircled by the black belt he awarded to me back in the 80's. Rest easy, WW, til we meet again. A good friend is forever .....

My wife, Nina, and I extend our most sincere condolences to Wayne's family members on his passing. In light of the void it has created for us, we can only imagine the sense of loss you are all feeling. May your many happy memories of him soon bring a smile to your lips before they bring a tear to your eyes. Very soon after starting to work together, Wayne and I discovered we were fellow karate practitioners, although "WW" far outranked me at 3rd Degree Black Belt compared to my brown belt at the time. After many hours of training together my friend and Sensei promoted me to 1st Degree Black Belt, which remains one of the highest honors received in my lifetime.  People use the phrase "would give you the shirt off his back" to describe the giving nature and true friendship of someone, but it is often an exaggeration; in Wayne's case it was not. We often helped each other out with "a few bucks til payday", but his giving nature far surpassed that. A myriad of circumstances in the late '80s found Nina and I stranded in Barstow, CA with no way back to Vegas. I called my true friend in the morning and explained what had happened, and asked if he could get us home. Although working nights at the time and only having been asleep a short time, all he said was, "what hotel are you at?"  I told him and he said, "I'll be there as soon as I can".  Give or take 2 hours later, he was knocking at our room door and drove us back home. Sure, we paid for the gas and bought him a meal, but how many "friends" possess such a truly giving nature? Wayne Washington did. Wayne - my friend, sensei, confidant, brother in arms - you are and will remain profoundly missed.

My spirit was truly devastated to learn of my dear friend Wayne's passing. Both born and raised in Chicago, I did not have the privilege of knowing him until we both moved to Las Vegas and worked in security (the way it used to be) at the Castaways Hotel/Casino. We instantly "clicked", and he was my finest Officer (I was a Sergeant and the shift supervisor): courageous, dedicated, articulate, and with an uncanny ability to diffuse volatile situations without a raised voice or drawn weapon, utilizing instead his infectious smile, incredibly quick wit, and sense of empathy towards people experiencing difficult situations - qualities sorely lacking in most security and law enforcement officers today. We quickly began sharing fond memories of Chicago and discovering similar interests, becoming fast friends in a very short time. For 13 years starting in 1980 there were very few days that we did not talk to and/or see one another, and often it was a threesome, as Wayne was also a great friend to Nina, my wife. Workouts, meals, holiday get togethers, and chasing those elusive quarter poker machine royal flushes (which he caught several of over the years and we never did) brought hours of laughter and enjoyment. During this time I returned to public law enforcement (having been a Chicago cop for 8 years) with the State of Nevada and encouraged my pal to apply as well, which after a short time he did and was hired immediately. When I subsequently joined the "Feds" and had to leave Vegas, we lost track of each other, speaking only a few times on the phone until Nina and I were able to return here in 2006. Wayne and I met for lunch in 2007 and it was as if we had just seen each other a few days prior. Regretfully, I was still travelling often for work and we were never able to renew our friendship to the level it had once been. My life was truly enhanced by knowing this marvelous man, and the world has been significantly diminished by his passing.

Prayers and Blessings from the Patton family ___ Wayne's extended family in Chicago. He spent so much time in our home,  Mama Washington said she'd let us have him __ but we'd surely bring him back, when we had to FEED him regularly.      (LOL)   
   

My 70th Bday. "Get the gate Wayne!" became our all time humorous bond. I yelled it during a dog chase. Funny because his legs were so long__ that I was running twice as fast to keep up. So when I get to Heaven,; "Get the gate Wayne!".
