Charles passed away on December 21, 2021, the winter solstice, a celebration of death and renewal. He died peacefully in his sleep in Dunwoody, Georgia. Charles greeted everyone with “happy day to you,” no matter how difficult the day may have been. He always had a positive outlook.
Charles was in the Navy as an aviation radioman during WWII, Pacific. Later, he retired from the Navy, Lt. Commander.
Charles graduated from University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Education and later received a master's degree. He moved to southeast Florida to teach high school math. In between, he was a principal in Bluffton, SC for a year, but returned to Deerfield Beach High School until his retirement.
He loved camping and hiking in the Smoky Mountains every year, so when he retired from teaching, he and his wife, Cassandra, bought some property in Sevierville, TN and built Halcyon Farm. Together, they stayed busy riding horses, milking goats, loving on their dogs and cats, bee farming, and helping their neighbors. He took pride in receiving guests and watching his grandkids play with the animals and in the creek. He also thoroughly enjoyed his time with St Joseph the Carpenter Episcopal Church and its members. He had an Advanced HAM license and belonged to Amateur Radio Emergency Service. He never understood why Morse code was omitted from the license requirements. Charles will be remembered for his humbleness, positive attitude, and his love for the outdoors.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Sherri; son-in-law, Jonathan; his favorite granddaughter, Danielle; and favorite grandson, Forest.
